So today my goal was to get an IRC client in linux finally (after putting it off four about 6 months) i tried to get xchat to work, but the rpm fails to notice that i have openssl installed (and therefore libcrypto and libssl) and the source fails to compile after a successful ./configure
B*tchX has the precompiled binary that has more than a few problems, and the source also fails to compile after a successful ./compile
does anyone have a recommendation besides these two clients?
command line preferred but a GUI app will be ok too

Don't have any great recommendations but in the meantime if you've got Pidgin it can connect to IRC.

i'll have to look at it, i use either rpm or tar.gz depending on the software, but xchat failed miserably no matter which way i worked it, so i'll wait for an update as i'm not in the mood to fix the source right now

If you are running gnome try Smuxi, I am currently using it and am very happy with it. I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty and apt-get is my hero.

well i'm using konversation for now, even though i'm on gnome and it's KDE it's the only one that has worked so far, i'm still making my way down the posts though, so i will try all the other suggestions as well :) thanks all

So whats exactly wrong with BitchX? I mean it wants to compile but it can't.

I have used Irssi, but there is also
finch that is CLI IM and IRC. I believe it is installed if you compile from source, Pidgin.[

I love me some IRC. Freenode is a nice server with a good few +s social channels for you to find.
