Well i've installed Ubuntu 9.04 for the time being. The only problem I'm having is with my sound. I've tried everything I know to get the sound to work. I've used alsamixer to make sure my channels are not muted. I'm really at my wits end here. because now i can't watch any of my movies between classes.

so i'm to understand you are using AC'97 sound mixer right? not a 3rd party PCI sound card?

that's odd as this should normally play without a hitch on ALSA, what card is your alsamixer reporting?

also can you C&P the ALSA portion of the "/etc/module.conf" file?

Ubuntu 9.04 does not have an /etc/module.conf file but it does have an alsa-base.conf in the /etc/modprobe.d

ok and have you tested sounds via the aplay command? usually takes a .wav file

if that doesn't play anything then the device it is sending information to either isn't getting it out, or it's plugged into the wrong slot, or another external issue

if you try aplay with alsamixer open (to watch the GUI) and the bar does not move, then you have a driver problem

at least that's my take on it
