hiya folks... I intend to install the En Garde Linux secure server distro on a rackmount server setup ... using raid later after I get a couple of them ...but for now I wondered if anyone has used it in a server enterprise environment and if they had run into any problems...and yes I got all the docs form the site.. etc... what I am looking for is hands on knowledge of the distros quirks and workarounds .....

I will probably be installing apache /php/mySQL/ruby [if possible] and a couple of odds n sods to complete the install.... I will also be attempting to use one of the new SSD drives ...
[since they have a million hours warrenty and I am sick of IDE failing all the time ]

So in closing .. anyone ever used it?? and if so .. what suggestions do you have ....

hardware I will probably be using;

.:!:.dual Xeon supermicro 1U rackmount server around 2.8 or 3.2 ghz... most have 4 gigs fo ram to start but will take more...and it has the usual slots for pci or better and usb .. etc... gigahertz lan dual also ...

guess thats it..
Any info is apreciated...

cordially
A.R.C.

I am currently rebuilding all sites and not hosting at the moment but a completed portion of my site is available at 2arcnexus.com strictly for viewing...

its ben a long climb back from eye surgery but its time to speed up things a bit.. LOL.. just in case I go fookin' blind

en garde incorporates the nsa secure llinux configuration ... since basically the nsa dont seem to release distros on their own.. jsut make recommendations I guess... secure linux has been around for a long time . .but en garde is jsut a more elegant solution I think if someone wanted to run a complete server setup without clustering ...

it looks ok to me, though originally it was based off red hat, which is what suse is based off (though suse is developed and maintained by the makers of red hat) but remember that in the end, the security of a system lies in the admin's hands, they can put all the features they want into it, but if they are not utilized correctly, you might as well run windows good.gif

this is true... but basically I think of myself as well versed in servers overall .. especially since I refused to upgrade after win2K advanced server .. and still believe XPerimental apps like XP windows are fundamentally flawed...

my problem is windows update fried my computers running windows advanced server thru a bad file update.. which of course they listed on their site and said do this.. LOL.. as if that fixes all the dead drives and no bootup machines...

So basdically I decided a full switchover to linux is in order.... and never going back .. I would still keep a single machine for windows but never trust it for anything more than typing... LOL...

thank for the info..its appreciated... and jof course your correct about the admin utilizing his tools ...but i do hope en garde provides them and more ...

CLOSING THREAD NOW ... if anyone is a mod ..?
