And if you're gaming I'd advise stick with Windows. (W7 is worth the upgrade)
Some games may work but most will be hassle
Dual boot linux as main and a fully patched xp for gaming

i'm with Sp4 on this one, i run a dual-boot setup with opensuse and vista (completely offline) and i don't plan on moving to w7 until it warrants an upgrade, or i research the specs on the sound architecture and if it's any better than vista
there is no one best distro for any person, if you have trouble making switches and find yourself moving back to your old habits alot, go with a very easy distro, mandriva and fedora are not easy afaik
just remember that when it comes to installing graphics drivers, no distro is easy, so don't give up when you get to that point

I concur
dual boot is easy
best with a clean disk
install xp or win7 on about half te disk
do not partition the remainder
after finished installing xp
most distributions are good
I like Ubuntu,
lots of active support & development
anyway Ubuntu or any of the others
will take the space you give them gladly
and make the choices for you
[you can choose yourself if you want]
very easy, works well, especially
on older hardware

playing games using virtual box ... uses too much resources !!
best is to go the way everyone else have suggested ... dual booting !! as Maz said , if you find your self stuck in the part of installing/getting your gfx card working .. you maybe frustrated and left with nothing!!
when you are trying linux it is always best to have a safe zone/back up plan (WINDOWS) once you know your way all around then its entirely upto your discretion to have or not .. but for newbie's anyone would suggest not to take windows out of the dual boot option yet

LINUX needs a lot of Patience !!!
