I think I may have convinced the wife to get me a new console for xmas (already got a Wii and PSP)

Can't decide between the two though, so any input from owners would be appreciated smile3.gif

ps3 = free online, bluray, can't be modded, better graphics, some say not as much of a selection of games compared to the xbox.
xbox= $60 a year for online ANYTHING (that includes even the time and date), no mod, can be modded easily, has hdmi,
mikedangers
PS3 = slightly better graphics, lackluster online options, somewhat bigger and bulkier build, more non-shooter games
360 = insane amount of options and support for online play and much more, the most games available of all new consoles, somewhat lacking in RPG's

dEVIANT
I've always been a bigger fan of the Playstation brand than any other platform, but from what I can see I'm going to get more for my money with a 360.
The extra features on the PS3 aren't anything i'm likely to use so they don't really come into it.

I could also buy a premodded 360, seen them for around £230.
mikedangers
If you get a modded 360, be very careful of your online activities. Microsatan loves to come down on abusers.

Usually your OK if you avoid playing pirate games on Live as that is the only thing that voids the T&C.

Not quite true. You get silver access for free which allows you to download the latest updates for games, some, albeit limited, videos and mini games and any content that is free, such as some of the new skins.

Always better to buy your own and mod it. There is plenty of material around and it's not that hard. There is always a chance though that you will get one that has to have the probe soldered but having said that it's still better than buying a new console that someone has already tinkerked with. You never know what they've done. Plus you will need to learn to do it eventually as M$ regularly brings out what has become known to be new Wave's (different sized partition on the disks) and if you have a Wave 3 mod you will need to re-flash to get a Wave 4 game.

somewhat lacking in RPG's

Generally, the RPGs are good though. I have Lost Odessy, Star Ocean The Last Hope, Blue Dragon & Eternal Sonata and I would recommened each one of them. FFXIII is also out soon(ish) as well. I for one can't wait.

Anywho, i'd say get a 360, but I am a little biased since i've got one. Both good consoles, but i'd say the Xbox just edges it, especially if you want any sort of online experience. You can get cheaper 12 month codes from eBay if you reckon you can trust the seller to not be an arse and send you a used code. I just got one for £26.07 (random price, I know, that's exchange rates for ya), which is significantly cheaper than the £40 it would have cost to buy through the console. For the jsut over £2 a month that has cost, it's well worth it.

I've got both a PS3 and Xbox and it really depends on what you want. Both are equally good, but are slightly different.

PS3 has somewhat better hardware and can play blu-ray movies, and it's really silent compared to the xbox (especially the new Slim edition). PS3 also has wireless networking. The wireless controllers have built-in batteries and have to be charged through a USB cable connected to the PS3 (so you can play both wired and wirelessly). If you like racing games, PS3 supports racing wheels such as the Logitech Driving Force Pro/GT and G25, which the 360 doesn't.

If you go for the 360, you should buy the Elite edition which, unlike the Arcade, has a hard drive. The Xbox has, in my opinion, somewhat better online capabilities, and you also get a headset which you can connect to the controller if you buy the Elite. The wireless controller has, in my opinion, a slightly better shape which fits better in your hand than the PS3's controller. The 360's controllers have AA batteries which last longer than the PS3, but it might also be more expensive in the long run if you don't buy rechargeable batteries. The 360 can also be modded, so you can play downloaded games ("backups"), although Microsoft has lately banned lots of modded consoles from Live (rumours has it that a million consoles have been banned; you can still play offline though).

Other than those differences, I think it comes down to the games. Which games look most appealing to you? Which consoles has the best games in your opinion?

Xbox360 has the Halo series, Gears of War, Forza, Fable, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, Dead Rising, Left 4 Dead and extra DLC for GTA IV. Upcoming games include Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake, Fable 3 and Left 4 Dead 2

PS3 has the Uncharted series, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid, Resistance series, Killzone, Gran Turismo, MotorStorm, Ratchet & Clank, Heavenly Sword. Upcoming releases include MAG: Massive Action Game, Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, Heavy Rain and The Last Guardian.

360 has an amazing selection of games but the ps3 does have some pretty great series... read.gif

Well i'd go for the 360
dEVIANT
PS3 so far.

If you don't have a Blu-Ray player then getting a PS3 would be a good investment as Blu-Ray is the inevitable physical replacement to DVD-Video. This, as long as you find the selection of games available for the system sufficient. If you are interested in online play, then the Xbox360 will give you the best experience in that regards. If you are having that much trouble choosing which console to buy, it's likely that you'll be happy with either one, albeit maybe more with one than the other. In your case, I'd look at it this way... the PS3 costs more, and always will. If you have a choice of which one to get, go for the one that costs more now, because if you decide you want to get the other console in the future, you'll have an easier time convincing your significant other on it the cheaper it is...
dEVIANT
It all comes down to Metal Gear Solid 4, that's a must have.

The 360 might be cheaper to buy initially, but by the time i've bought the wireless kit and the years subscription to Live the PS3 becomes the cheaper option anyway.

As long as she buys me Resident Evil 4 I won't mind too much either way.

(meant Res Evil 5, completed 4 on all formats numerous times, love that game)

As a 360 & Wii owner, I can say PS3 for the Hardware, 360 for the online experience.

I kid of wish i had both systems, i would love to have the PS3 to play Blu-Rays, have Wi-Fi, and run Linux(Never mind, turns out Sony disabled this feature on the PS3 Slim's) on a gaming console (soon to be on my Wii), and the 360 for playing games with friends through XBL.

So i'd say ... get both.

EDIT: another thing is that the 360 only supports FAT file systems, which may or may not be a problem if you don't plan on watching Movies/TV through your gaming console.
Swabodda
I don't have a 360 but I play my brother-in-law's an awful lot. There are definitely more games to choose from, but I wouldn't trade my PS3 for a 360 and cash. The PS3, when you look at its capabilities, is hardly even being taxed. MS will end up releasing a new xbox while the PS3 is still making strides. Yes, the online service is a bit lacking, but its getting better... Couple that with the blu-ray player, wi-fi, a hard drive in every console, and the fact that Sony seems to enjoy maing its customers happy it looks to me like the PS3 is a win-win. I know everybody has their opinion, but my two cents goes for the Sony.

** Gran Turismo 5, due out in March (Fingers crossed) will be the first game on a console to display at 1080p... I wonder when a 360 game will do that...**
mikedangers
MGS:4?!
But.. that's not even a game, just a compilation of cut scenes!! yucky.gif yucky.gif yucky.gif yucky.gif yucky.gif yucky.gif

EDIT***

It seems like alot of the time a PS3 owner is giving their reasons for owning a PS3 over a 360, it involves the future. Microsatan will release a new system while Sony's will still be going strong and blah blah blah. If I lived in the future, I might consider that a valid argument. Since I want to enjoy my console and it's vast array of games and amazing online capabilities in the here and now, I think I'll just stick with my 360.

All Xbox 360 models can be modded. However all the later editions require a hardware probe to be solder onto the board to complete the mod.

Flatline Is it any easy thing to solder the hardware probe onto the board and is the board hart to get at? on the new 360.

There's probably instructions on how to do it all over the net. Give it a google.

i dont understand, i see ps3 titles on torrent sites, but as some here said, the ps3 cant be modded, i even tried burning the games on blu ray and installing some lame program wich f*cked up my first ps3.. so why the hell are those games on there? probably fake ones right??

i own 28 ps3 games, i would have saved ALOT of money downloading those games :(.. infact im gonna do the math now.. 1932 euros, damn i wish ive never did ''the math''

PS3 was the right choice. I have both the PS3 and 360 and i rarely use my 360, congratulations!
bigbudda
same here, i sold my 360 within a week

I reckon the 360 only gave PS3 any competition due to one game series - Halo.

Apart from Halo all the best releases and best games are on the PS3.

Stands up in front of the audience My Names Lukesean and i'm addicted to Tiger Woods PGA Golf on the PS3.
PYROiNATOR
A load of you may disagree but i think the PS3 is better technologically but the xbox takes the win. It has more games better community and is just more fun to use. I have both a PS3 and Xbox 360 and i only really use the ps3 for playing MGS4 and the Xbox 360 for everything else! But remember PC rules! biggrin.gif

^ A bit of food for thought ^

I still have had zero problems with my 360, and play MW2 with more then a few darksiders on XBL.
Flatline
I've had a problem twice with my Xbox's the first one M$ fixed within a week (return service) and gave me free XBL, the second time I fixed myself for $10. I'd still take a Xbox360 everytime over anything else.

same here but with the ps3 haha i still have had zero problems with my ps3, and play MW2 with more then a few darksiders on PSN.
=Sixpack=
I bought myself a 360 elite for christmas along with MW2/Forza3/Fable2/GOW2/Borderlands/Dead space and Halo3 ODST (4 games came free with it)
and im loving it,i cant recommend a HDMI Cable enough though, looked horrible before i got one.

Still got the Pc for internet and games like CSS/TF2/L4D and dragon age origins

and then the Wii which my ex got me last christmas for resort and mario kart and very rarely Zelda.

Never played on a PS3 and im not even interested in one.

This seems like a thread i'd be worthy of putting an opinion in..

The 360 is a brilliant device, the updates for the games are continuous and so are add ons for the device itself. Sure there are new skins and themes and thats all great, but the titles made ONLY for the 360 are not that many however they are in fact better if you ask me. RPG's and some FPS are available only on the 360. In addition to the only titles for the 360 as opposed to the PS3 they're more higher rating games (T and M) for the 360, as were the PS3 has more of the games for kids as well. I'm not entirely impressed with the titles made only for the PS3, however there are few that i wish the 360 had. But thats the gamble. Yes the PS3 has free online play which is a great feature, however I've heard many complaints about the servers and their lack of consistency. Also the online play for the 360 may be 50$ a year, however there are so many great updates that have been released and most likely will be released for the 360.. (not saying there will be nor am i saying there wont be, just speaking based on pattern) no doubt you've heard my job, and those that haven't there is a thread about it. Therefore you know i work with the 360 everyday and it is a great job, with that i can still identify whats the positives of the 360 and the negatives. The 360 does usually lack the response time we all wish it had, such as if you push start, it can take a few seconds to load. also the interactive start times of the games, all differ and even some are incredibly inconsistent. I these things highly bother you, then i wouldn't suggest a 360, however if the idea of thousands of add ons, and new updates, then the 360 is definitely for you. Cheers!

I say the Xbox 360!! I have 2 of them. One on my flatscreen and the other on the beamer. OMG playing on a beamer rules!! I got about 50 games by know and all original.

But I would like to have the PS3 too.

Never go for the 360! It's a ticking time bomb, mine just blew up(RRoD) last june and it was they're so called "ELITE",
And it didnt happen while i was playing, it worked fine i played 6 hours of N3 next day it has the RRoD...crappy machines.
Go for the PS3 they're way better +everything is free online in comparison to 360, where after you pay for a membership(gold being the only one even remotely worth it) you still have to buy they're stupid microsoft points just to get any content(yes even your tiny avatar).

just an observation but why are so many ps3 owners so anti xbox its like an xbox has personally attacked them or insulted them
