Hi guys!!

My dad's computer has gotten the lsass.exe virus, and it will not boot into windows at all, not even into fail safe mode? Is it possible for me to boot up my Ubuntu live disk and install avast home in the live session and then scan the XP file system?

yes it's possible to do that, but you might find it difficult if there is not enough memory (installing things in a live environment can sometimes be trouble) if that is the case, go with the usual hiren's or knoppix (a very powerful linux livecd)
