I'd like to connect with some friends via an IRC channel, but have no clue how to get started. I downloaded and installed Colloquy and tried to just type in the irc channel, but it just sits there. I suspect I still have to do something else to complete the interface but I'm completely in the dark as to how to proceed. I tried to locate documentation at the program website (colloquy) but they have yet to post any. So I'm stuck with a program and no clue how to use it.

If anyone has an idea how to use this or can suggest a better client I'd appreciate it. I'm on a MacBook Pro running X.4.11, but soon will upgrade to SnowLeopard. Thanks.

Did you look through this page?

http://colloquy.info/project

and in particular, this?

I just use iChat and sometimes Adium so I can't offer any advice on this.

i'm with groon, i would have just used xchat or adium (adium would be like the mac version of pidgin or trillian)

Is it possible to just use Jabber via Google? I have never done this and was wondering how to set up any IRC chat. I've set up Jabber on iChat and now am trying to figure out how to connect to any IRC channel. I d/l-ed adium and still have no clue. I have some IRC channels but when I type them in nothing happens.

Forgive me, I'm totally new to this.

http://channels.webmaster.com/help/ may provide some help for you. I started looking for a java based chatroom software a few days ago and have met some people who told me to download mIRC and are now trying to help me configure it. The hardest problem I had to overcome was figuring out how to connect to a server. I don't know how it works on a Mac but on XP I had to go to Tools > Servers > WebChat > Random server. Then I was able to type in the room I wanted to go to and get there.

Or try Snak.

I'm sure there's a shared version out there somewhere.

Thanks, I've gotten caught up in end of the semester crunch so I'll try some of these suggestions in another week or so.
