Hi there, i have a problem
I have a sony vaio laptop with vista home as OS but recently i happen to install Ubuntu (alternative) OS with out making partion (actually i planned to have both as dual OS) but unfortunatly now i cant retrive or use files which are in vista nor open vista OS....and i dont get option to chose when i start.
how can i stwich between both OS or at least how can i log into vista OS ? how can i unistal ubuntu........
plz help me

Sounds like there is a problem with the boot record, are you sure you did a dual install and didn't overwrite Windows?

Boot into Ubuntu and you should be able to view the contents of the Windows driver, if it's not their then you might have overwritten it.

If it is there, backup and files you need from BOTH systems then try rewriting the MBR with this guide.

When i boot into ubuntu i cant see any windows driver or files....as you mentioned i must overwritcan i en windows with ubuntu sadly...
any furthur suggestions plz..

can do same with windows recovery cd ( i mean now overwriting ubuntu with windows,,is this possible....though i know i will be not able to recovery my old data))

Sounds like you've lost whatever was on there, unless you use some recovery software.

Unless the contents are important its probably not worth the hassle.

Stick in the disc for whichever OS you want and wipe the partitions, format and reinstall.

Thanks alot.. y data is not so important other then contacts, rest is all not so important...

If you want to install ubuntu then do it using WUBI installer that way it gets installed in your Windows partition itself !!
you don't need to make a separate partition nor do you need to fear any data loss :)

ubuntu isnt a destructive install like windows, back up any important data on an external drive, and follow a good ubuntu install guide, and you should be fine ;)

and it will be much faster that way
