Got this working on my machine so I thought i'd share.

Install WINE, at least version 1.1.3*

Download gdiplus.dll, open terminal and type sudo nautilus
Copy the file to home/yourusername/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/system32

The type tool causes a crash but you can get a fix, look on Google for atmlib.zip.
Copy it as above.

You now need Photoshop CS4 Portable (try Google)

Extract it if needed and move the folder where you want it, mine is in WINE's Program Files.

Launch WINE configuration, on the 1st tab click add and find the exe to Photoshop. There are 2, one in the root folder and one in the app folder, i've had less problems if I add both.

After adding each .exe go to the Libraries tab and select gdiplus.dll from the drop down menu (do this for both)

That should work, now just run the .exe or make a launcher in the menu ( I use the app folder link)

I've had crashes if I try to open the preferences, but working on images has been fine for me.

Also worth enabling Anti aliasing for WINE, google it.

Just so you know there have been (sort of) rumblings regarding Photoshop having a native Linux version (albeit in Ubuntu)... This came about due to a rather strange questionaire on the Ubuntu forums by a senior member appearing to ask on behalf of Canonical management. I wish I still had the link but Im sure it's easily found on the Ubuntu forums
