Just come across a program called remastersys.

It can make a full system backup including personal data to a live cd or dvd that you can use anywhere and install.

To install it open a terminal and:

CODE
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

At the bottom paste:

CODE
deb http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/repository karmic/

Save, close then back in terminal:

CODE
sudo apt-get update

and

CODE
sudo apt-get install remastersys

You can find it under System > Administration > Remastersys Backup

I've created a Live CD and booted to it in a VM. Everything appears identical to as on my installation, including all passwords, cookies etc in Firefox.

Now that is ace, You dont see that with window$!##I am doing it as I type.
dEVIANT
Just a word of warning, you're limited to 4GB in size for the ISO, so if you have loads of music/videos you'll need to back them up seperately and omit that from your Live CD

Thanks for the pre-warn dEVIANT, I like it fresh. Nothing added sort of backup.

I try to keep music documents and films on network server

:D

How do you find the latest Ubuntu (9.10)?

I am enjoying it a lot, It comes with everythng needed straight from install.

I have had very little need to mess around with anything.

I found that using the live cd was ok but mysound wasn't configured intially? Odd but it was very simple to get it fixed, i think I may have done it? It also had no Mp3 support so a quick install from the repo, and I was away.

Within an hour I had fully installed over my windows with Ubuntu, I am now seeking more info. I want to be a super user.

I have created scripts for my remote desktop and added the apps I like to my bars. Yes its great. I am thinking of installing it to my server. I have no need for windows? I only ever stuck with it for the games but I now use consoles for that.

Only thing I think stopping me doing that is I stream movies from my server to my Xbox? BUT I was looking into a network drive so I didn't need to stream from my windows server?

One issue I do have is iPhone, it seems one of the only options is to run VMware but I really dont want to do that, I cannot see the USB when I dmesg? It idoes not show up yet it does mount the camera directory? Odd.

Not sure about the iphone or Xbox, but i'm sure it's doable. I use PS3 Media Server to stream to my PS3, must be something for Xbox.

been using it myself. this is my version of ubuntu karmic. its slimmed down a bit, and added a firewall, vlc is the media player, already preset. added themes and backgrounds. it also has restricted drivers, java, and flash player installed. and is 64 bit, its tested, updated, and good to go.

the original kamic ubuntu can be found here.

edit: wow, realised old thread, yeah im sure ive had this convo somewhere eh pengy :D drinks.gif
