Gnome 3 is due in the October release of Ubuntu, i've tried it and it is very different from the current version.

There is one new menu that shows your most recent programs and documents, includes a search box and shows a preview of all open windows on the right.

It's still in dev stages so it's far from a finished product, here's a screenshot.

I've tried it on my Karmic installation and it ran ok, below are the steps to try it. Don't worry if you don't like it, it only stays in effect until you log out. These steps are for Karmic ONLY:

Open a terminal.

sudo apt-get install build-dep

sudo apt-get build-dep gnome-shell

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

That will install the new shell and will also get updated along with your usual updates.
To run the new shell run the following in terminal:

gnome-shell --replace

What version of Ubuntu are you running?
pengy_666
Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, Got it from Ubuntu website on sunday night.
dEVIANT
Have you enabled all the repo's - System > Administration > Software Sources and make sure the restricted and multiverse options are ticked on the Ubuntu tab, then tick any unticked on the Third-Party tab.

The go back to terminal and do

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

Try again after that (might be worth logging out and back in again)

You might need to enable to restricted drivers/hardware from the System > Admin tab.

Hmm looks like I may have missed out

sudo apt-get upgrade

Report back soon.

It is working now, It decided to lose all my launchers and changed the look of the panel I edited.

I feel lost without the lower panel.

It did bug out when I closed the terminal.

I must remember to not do things hastily though.

Is there any way to implement it permanently?

I think I could work with it. In fact I like it a lot.

If you launch an app through the terminal then you cannot close the terminal as it will close the job.

I only use 1 panel at the bottom in a similar layout to windows. I don't like losing screen space to 2 panels when everything fits on 1.

The new Gnome is an interesting idea, still needs a lot of work doing to it though.
pengy_666
I take it that the new gnome is not ready to run fully yet? I really like it!

I still get a GLX error when i run it.

It's still in development. The next Ubuntu release (10.4) is out in April and it won't be ready for that, have to wait for October's release (10.10)

Without going into one of my rants, I think Gnome now is far too dependent on Mono for my liking and last time I checked Ubuntu (with the 10.04 alpha 3) that trend continues within the default packaging of Canonicals next LTS.

Mono is not something I want any part of.

Looking at future Ubuntu I see GIMP being removed. I wonder what for? A Mono package? and lets keep in mind that when a Mono package is compared to a "native" package of similar function, Mono shows its true colors being far inferior.

Gnome Shell (Gnome 3) is now stable enough for daily use, although I still prefer the old style.
It is now in the official repo's, although they use old versions, to get current builds, in terminal:

CODE
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/testing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

By default it's an ugly black, get some themes here.

To try it, run

CODE
gnome-shell --replace

This will run alongside your panels, so for best performance run it as default at startup:

CODE
sudo update-alternatives --config x-window-manager

and select option 'mutter', then:

CODE
sudo cp /usr/share/applications/gnome-shell.desktop /etc/xdg/autostart

Restart, and it is now running as the native window manager.

To remove it, run the config again and select 'metacity' then

sudo nautilus

and browse to "/etc/xdg/autostart" and delete "gnome-shell.desktop" and reboot.

Testing now, so far so good, just need to figure out installing new themes, thank you for sharing!

Update- Seems to be working well, only issue is my emerald themes no longer are effective with windows borders etc. unsure.gif
