Everytime i cut out a person or anything for that matter it can get so tricky if lets say hair is flying and theres little patches of..blue for example for the sky...instead of cutting those 50 tiny parts out manually how can i extract the whole colour? I think that was possible since i heard someone did it but i have no clue how to do it myself...If its possible that is...
So anyone know how to do it?
Arctic Viking
I'm just using GIMP myself, so I don't know how to this in PS. But as far as I understand you want to get rid of the blue around the hair (in the example)? If so, I would guess something like color to alpha... as I mentioned, I don't know how to do this exactly in PS. Or you could probably use some selecting-tools to select just one specific color (the blue), and delete that part.. don't know what would look the best though...

Hopefully someone with PS can answer your question...

So you want to be able to cut people/objects out of existing pictures but where there's something "whispy" like hair - how do you cut them out without...

1. Including loads of the background through the whispy bits
2. Cutting whispy bits short and losing detail

???

Yea that would work but in the later versions (CS4) i dont have that option, and its the master edition so i doubt it still exists. I had heard of it before but i think they removed it after Cs3...maybe i'm wrong though...But thanks anyway for the help :).
~Edit~
PS6.0 7/01 its for version 6 and i think cs4 is version 10 or 11...
faerie
apologies...I don't have CS4 a022.gif

Nahh its okay thanks, Thanks Distroyed the first link on the page helped the second is for older versions again....Isnt it weird that such a useful tool doesnt exist in the new versions?

A friend and myself were the photographers at another friend's wedding and when it came to editing the photos I had a couple great indoor shots where I wanted to take visual focus off the clutter that was the front room. To apply a blur and to wash out the colors without affecting the bride I had to do the following...

Duplicate the photograph into a new layer so I now have 3 layers (1=background (white), 2=photo, 3=photo) then hide layer 2 and select layer 3.

With the eraser tool set to a comfortable size, roughly 20% hardness erase an outline around clothing which results in a feathered edge. When it comes to anything like hair I skipped around it going as close as I could.

Larger eraser tool 100% hardness to remove the rest of the background.

Smaller eraser at roughly 10% hardness with 10% flow and working carefully around hair I'd stroke outwards with the mouse at various points paying more attention to open areas between hair, occasionally changing eraser size to work between any gaps.

Once I've removed all I need I reveal layer 2 and select it.

Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation
Bring the "Saturation" slider down until comfortable with the amount of color washing on the background.

Select layer 2 again and Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur
Now the preview helps here - drag the preview to a bordering area so you can see layers 2 and 3 in the preview and make sure it's at 100% zoom for ease of use. Now use the slider to blur the background just enough and click OK when done.

The only thing left to do now is maybe some more erasing of later 3 around the edges of your subject to tidy things up a bit.

There are easier and quicker options to do this (read up on using the quick mask) but it's how I've done it and has become a bit of a habit for me and right now I can do this extremely fast as will you the more you practice.

Happy editing!
