Where I live, I've started to notice every person I know has phones that cost over $150, and come with a monthly bill around $100, in this horrible economy how in the hell do they afford that???

Nearly 78 of my friends have iPhones/iPods...some people are getting too addicted to their overpriced mobile/mp3 devices.

The cell phone providers are making millions of $$$ from this, yet other types of technology don't really get necessarily profit near or close of CPP(cell phone providers).

So my question for you mates, what do you really think, this is the "buying phones that cost a kidney and a leg" era?

it's the new in thing. Before this it was ALL iPods, only a select few of my friends bragged about the awesome phones they had with mp3 capabilities, expansion slots and what have you, and they were the people with some money to throw away.
[rant]Personally i prefer to have no cell phone. If my family would adopt a new method of contacting me, i would get rid of it altogether, i despise phones in every shape and form, they are intrusive, interrupting and generally rude. They don't care what you are doing, they just ring and expect you to drop whatever you are doing to answer. [/rant]

Mazuki, I agree with your ranting, it is quite disrespectful. My friends ask me to get a phone, and I always reply in this same sentence:
"I don't need a damn phone a pointless waste of $100 monthly, there are other methods of contact." Thanks to phones dumb@$$es can drive + text =
car crash/death. It really is intrusive, interrupting, and rude.

You have the sexiest phone I have ever seen Hash

I did have an expensive phone (£500+) but the replacement costing me less than £200 does everything it did. Monthly bill is around £35 which is affordable.

Hmm...that is a hell of a deal.
Where I live rarely is a nice phone priced like that.

My phone is just the free one that came with the plan. I hate having one, and didn't until about a year ago. For matter, I really hate texting, and disconnected the internet part of my plan.
Anyone else read the Stephen King novel, Cell. I figure cellphones are going to be the downfall of civilization as we know it and I don't want to be on the phone when that happens!!

I have to admit I do have a "fancy" cell phone but only because it came with my contract and I got a contract as it was easier than PAYG.

I agree completly. I have my phone on silent all the time so if someone calls I don't even have to hear it and will only respond to the call/text when I'm free and ready. I wouldn't really have a need for a phone other than people phoning me to give me work, if it wasn't for that then I wouldn't use it at all. Although it has came in handy to keep in contact with a few friends who don't have internet and I don't see all that often so it's really the only means to keep in contact with them.

I agree. What in the hell do i need a $1500 phone for? Oh it has Mp3,and Mp4 movie capacity, oh my god i can chat and have internet....WHAT FOR? I don't want to listen to Mp3 and hell no do i want to watch a movie on a 3 inch screen. I don't see my self writing on DS through a phone browser.
And the private life...Gone to hell. In my job i have to be on stand by 24/7 because of this stupid phone in the old days i was off after 17:00. Now...no off time anymore. If i don't answer the damn phone right away they keep bugging me untill i do...
I hate mobile phones...They are not part of my life...They have taken over my life.

I agree with most of the comments and points made, however, I find a mobile phone Invaluable and a necessity for anyone self employed.
It both saves and makes you money.
I was fortunate to be offered a Blackberry cheaply, get it unlocked then use my pay as you go Sim in It.
As Its used mostly for Incoming calls, I cant justify having a monthly contract.

Me and my wife both have iPhones.
They are great and not to expensive. I pay £45 a month for mine but my wife only pays £30 Both the phones were free upgrades.

Same as that (except for the Blackberry bit!

). My daughter's boyfriend gave me his Nokia N series when they were here last summer, as he gets upgrades every year. It's got all sorts of bells and whistles, but I never use any of them. But for business (I'm also self-employed) it really is an essential item. Like twoplus, I'm on pay as you go as I don't make many calls, mostly receive them. The camera is handy for work, too.

(maybe if i got one they would? who knows?

Seriously though, My work friends have joined the IPhone/Andriod battle and its all that they talk about in work. its quite boring really.
I mean, if your out and about why on earth would you "want" to be using a phone. I personally like to be in my own headspace when not at my pc.
Although the Android app that will automatically trigger a torrent download of a movie or book by scanning the ISBN/Barcode of an item in a shop, while your out is quite clever. free shopping.

oooo Maz I'm with you 200% in your rant!
A training company my fiance is currently with demonstrated that perfectly. She was on holiday and had beforehand told them she was away on holiday yet one particular individual decided to keep pestering her and in the end she had to turn her phone off. This training officer made a nasty mistake in saying to one of her colleagues that "if we have their mobile number we can call them whenever we want" but her mistake was the individual she said that to - a relative of one of my fiance's best mates. Needless to say that training officer was given a severe telling off by more than one including management.
If I didn't have to have one I'd scrap mine altogether as well but if I break down I need to call someone because I can longer walk far due to temporary health circumstances.
I have a really old cheap Nokia that makes calls and enables me to send SMS messages which is all I need and it cost me a tenner. Because it's so cheap I've no need for their over-inflated insurance which they rarely payout on anyway so I'll never have one of those expensive models out of choice. I genuinely feel sorry for those that feel the need to have an expensive phone because otherwise they'll feel left out or are behind with the times.

I am one of those people with a really expensive practically "waste of money phone" but the way i have come to see it, i actually dont mind watching an episode of house or what not on it when i cant be bothered to set up my laptop to wi-fi and move it etc... but in the long run yea they are a waste of money but if you buy it without contract (pay as you go) then they are fun and can last a really long time if you like it...

I have to agree aswell
Everyday I catch public transport, and everyday there is some idiot (or a few) who wants to tell the whole train their
whole life story
I love to read, but Im really easily distracted....I cant even read when there is music. The train is the only time I get to
read really, and it makes me so angry when I have to listen to this. Normally I have to put my book away cause I cant
concentrate
I cant have my phone on at work as it messes with the equipment, so I have got into the habit of not even bringing it
with me. I never answer it when Im home and all my friends get really annoyed
IMO about the only thing they are good for is being an alarm clock....Even then, I have got to the stage where I am sooo
tired and dont want to get up so they end up under my pillow ( I have 3)
But for a laugh....
LINKThis one is quite clever....but look at the price just for the app....

I had an iphone 3g for about two weeks and it drove me bonkers!
My ex-wife bought it for my 40th so was not impressed when i put it on ebay :P
have also had an HTC Hero since, that also got on my wick! Have gone back to my trusty Samsung sgh-900...
these "smart" phones are great for just sitting at home or in the pub with a nice wi-fi connection but no good for me jumpin in and out of trucks at work and my outdoor fun...
great toys but too much trouble for phonecalls and texts...
thats my opinion anyway

Maybe in a couple decades, mobile computers will have gotten so tiny and powerful that there's no more reason to compete between companies anymore

Thanks St4lk3r I've been a member of XDA for some time. Fortunately my leaked Eris had a trackball issue (freezeups, no scrolling, cursor wouldn't move for texts) and Verizon was only too happy to replace my Eris with a free 1.5 Eris.

And now I'm rooted and loving this phone.

Congrats on the "new" phone then..

I love gadgets and really like my HTC HD2 which i have "upgraded" with a couple of cabs from xda.
Tbh i feel lost if i leave home without a phone just for the peace of mind that i have contact if/when i need it say if i broke down etc.
It's not everybodys thing but hey ho i like messin with it and windows 6.5 mobile.
I bought it off ebay and use a monthly sim only contract from o2 in the uk. My 12 year old daughter isn't allowed anywhere with out her phone unless shes with us so we always have some contact.
The best thing about it is i can
ignore any calls i want, when i want, if i want so i don't see the intrusion problem some others do but thats just my opinion.

First off, Beautiful sig man!
Yea i'm kinda like that too, at the end of the day it sonly a phone but i realised how much it does become fun to mess around with once you get used to it.
I for example leave my phone on silent all day, practically everyday unless im expecting a call. I just enjoy playing music from it etc.

Some carriers actually give you thousands upon thousands of minutes. Either way I hate mobile phones. Instead of making the world a better place they have only made it worse, people not communicating anymore, kids having to call their friends on the phone instead of going up to the bugger and knocking at his door (just like we used to do in the good old days). You can't even take a sh*t without one of your colleagues buzzing you about the latest deadline and whatnot.

You have to think about this now.
Most people that need or want or have a smart phone AND use it frequently are for possibly good reasons.
ONE - Business related. It is mostly used for work contact on-the-go in or out of the office and it bleeds into their personal life. (This I understand the most)
TWO - They want to feel needed or accepted. I believe this to be a social faze.
THREE - They do it because having a Cell phone that can google MAP, Make Calls, USE as a decent MP3 player, send emails, use forums, and fits into your pocket is a lot more convenient (And Cheaper in most cases) then owning a laptop/PC...MP3 Player....House Phone....and cell phone.
Think about it.
