I've got a Samsung R610 laptop that I'm currently running OpenSuse 11.2 on. It's been working fine for as long as I can remember but today I was doing some work in Packet Tracer ( a networking program) and it crashed. It wouldn't let me click anything or use the numpad although it did let me Ctrl+Alt+1 and then login and init 3 then init 5 and got back into the desktop. But every since the numpad won't work. It will work if I boot back out of desktop to cli (Ctrl+Alt+1) but not inside desktop. I have double checked numlock and turned it on and off several times but all it will let me do is move my cusor with it (e.g. the arrows that you can use when numlock is not enabled), when I turn numlock off but if it's on I get no response. Anyone have a idea?

Also I have totally shutdown the machine and restarted.

Also if my desktop crash's like that again is there a easier way to get everything back without going Ctrl+Alt+1 init 3 then init 5, cause when I do that it losses everything I had up.

I don't have any suggestions for fixing the numpad, but to answer your other question. If it crashes again you can use try the Ctrl+c, Alt+F4, Ctrl+esc shortcuts. It's not always immediate but whenever a program locks up on me and seems to have crashed the entire desktop I try those and give it a few moments, usually it succeeds in killing that program. There's a shortcut for the 'xkill' utility, but I forget what it is, which will let you click an application and it will kill it. Depending on how OpenSuse has the 'zap' feature setup using Ctrl+Alt+Backspace will either kill your X session or restart it, depending on your settings when it's restarted it will restore your session.

The numpad issues I resolved by resetting all my settings. Fixed the issue. I knew it wasn't the hardware fault as it was working on a new test account and at the login dialog. Still no idea what actually caused the problem unsure.gif

As the other part, in Suse mazuki advised me that if it crashes just Ctrl+Alt+F1 then kill the offending program, and then Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to your desktop, or after if it's the desktop Ctrl+Alt+F1 the pkill -HUP gnome should restart gnome.
