For the last coulpe of weeks whenever I go to Pirate Bay a popup comes up trys to attack my computer. The popup trys to scan my computer before it's stopped by Norton's IS. Have anyone else had this problem.

I have not had any pop ups, just the usual weight loss adverts and dating sites

sounds like an advertiser they use got attacked again, get a good adblocking list for your browser and it should help stop them in the future

get a good adblocker and it should fix it, i block advertising companies and tracking servers just for that reason, infections can be propagated through them without the site owner ever being the wiser, it's really inter----dangerous stuff

Which browser do use, Timmins? There is an Adblock plugin for Firefox that I have started using recently... But like Maz said above it really is more about the blocklist than it is the actual plugin. Firefox's adblock plugin will recommend lists for the country you live in when you install it. You can also customize a list to your own personal settings...
And for the record: I wouldn't touch TPB with a ten foot pole anyways...

if timmins is talking about the same exploit I am thinking of I have encountered it as well, and amazingly it somehow bypasses firefox's pop-up blocker and will still attempt to attack your machine. Luckily I was testing in a VM when this happened so it was no big deal, but it is a nasty SOAB.

I have never had a problem, (knock on wood) but i am curious to know which is a good ad blocking program you would recommend maz? I dont have an adblocker currently running..

Crash, are you saying that the exploit bypassed Firefox's built in pop up blocking or the actual plugin Adblock? If it did get past the adblock plugin which list were you using with it?

it happened at least 3 times with firefoxes pop-up blocker and once with adblocker, and I believe it was EasyList from rick752 long forgot now, I removed it cause it interfered with some of the other sites i visited. It actually overrides firefoxes full screen capabilities and even initiates an auto download of the virus behind the scenes. like I said that was the variant that I encountered, not sure if tim got the same one or a less powerful one.
heres a screen capture of what it did

Wow, I just started using the Adblock plugin so haven't totally tested it out. I didn't know it caused problems like that...

I ran into the same exact issue running Firefox on TPB... The thing doesn't even let you run msconfig, control panel or anything... What i did (and thank goodness it has not come back since) was i restarted, as soon as my desktop appeared i ran task manager and changed the process the list so that it showed me the processes that were using the most memory... The virus is two different processes with similar names. If you stop the processes and then search your computer for those two files and manually delete them the virus won't come back... At least it hasn't for me. I hope this helped. Also, if you dont run task manager before the virus starts running you need to restart again and start task manager before the virus starts.

I'm glad i didn't visited TPB for last few days. I will never even try to type www.thepiratebay.org again!

while i'm not advocate of thepiratebay or anyone that uses 3rd party advertisement providers, i don't think it's fair to completely place the blame on thepiratebay and avoid it simply because of this issue
if you add a good adblocker or blocklist to your browser, you will not have this problem, personally i have never seen ads there except for the very first time i visited

Yes maz. It surely is not correct to blame on TPB in this issue. But i think it's always good to stay away from TPB to be safe.(I'm a lil hesitated to visit TPB since those legal issues took place) Currently I'm using kickasstorrents, btjunkie for torrents :)

Well... I blame TPB if a computer gets infected by visiting their site. But thats my opinion. For you FireFox users, Try NoScript add on, It blocks scrips from running on sites and you have to permit exceptions.. I just went to TPB clicked a few pages and didn't see ads or pop ups, looks like the same old PB.
I agree it's best to stay away from TPB .. I even delete TPB trackers when a torrent has multiple trackers in it.

the only thing TPB is at fault for is not actively monitoring their ads, they have no control over the established security of ad referral service providers' servers and software

Couldn't it be a virus on your own system? Because whenever I get a bad virus it affects my browsers and more popups come
Mazuki
Apr 18 2010, 03:58 AM
not typically if only 1 site is affected, most virus infections will attack multiple sites, or at least multiple sites of the same type e.g. search engines, ebay sites, online stores

I think you can run your browser sandboxed(using
sandboxie) Then whatever site you may visit, your computer never gets infected. Virus can't get through the sandbox and you can remove them easily. I think that's the best way to follow :)

I have noticed that with firefox 4 (pretty sure its gonna be out of RC soon) that i havent had as much "junk" pop up. try upgrading to Firefox 4 or hell even chrome, i use both with web programming and have noticed that i dont get as many "trojan detected!" popups from Avast!
*edit* Avast is also offering a sanbox mode o.0, imagine the things you learn when you actually look at the damn AV once in a while lol

It's likely to have been an ad. Piratebay is full of em... or so I'm told. I love my adblock.

I got one that looked just like it on both of my computers, but I got it on Google. Vista Home Security 2011. Effing virus that was a devil to get off. Took three days. Freaking annoying. Blocked my internet access, stopped me from running uTorrent, and all sorts of other crap.
