No idea, I bought my copy 
I don't think it's possible yet to play Bad Company 2 online without actually buying the game 
just buy it, it is well worth it. I always buy video games that are good even if i download them first, it solves so many problems.
I had heard somewhere that microsoft can tell if your 360's been modded and will actually ban your system from conecting w/ gold package. Could be just a rumor though. Nothing substantiated.
i bought it, it works online for me ... but i got it on pc, wbu?

well its not that they can tell just like that as such but updates, as far as im aware, will tell them and once they know the console is banned along with the user. which means ya need new details as well as a new console, so technically....err... you heard correct.
imho though this is a good thing as most people who use modded xboxes online use them to cheat in online multiplayer games. this destroys the game, i hold up halo2 on the original xbox and CODmw2 on the present as examples. 2 fantastic games that have been destroyed for me by this, using a chipped xbox to play copies non online is cool by me but would require 2 xboxes to live the dream.

The main system M$ use to detect modded console is the server connection. With a modded console the M$ Verified check is skipped but as a result the data sent to the server during online play differs, they detect you via the "un-verified" packets being sent to their server. As long as you don't play downloaded games on-line you will be fine. I have a chipped Xbox to play downloaded games, and I use it for Xbox Live as well I just only play legitimate games on-line and disconnect the internet connection when playing downloaded games.
