Hi all...I was just wondering if 1 hour and 15 minutes is the average or the norm for convertxtodvd to encode a 700mb avi file. the reason I ask is because it usaly takes me about 4 hours and 30 minutes to encode a 700mb avi, would this have anything to do with my settings in convertxtodvd or possibly something else?...I am running windows xp home with a Pentium (4) 1.80ghz processor with 768mb of ram...I would love to get the encoding down to 1 hour and 15 minutes...any help would be greatly appreciated!!...thanks all this site rocks!!

Hi everything on your pc makes a difference to encoding time, ie: what apps you have running , are you browsing etc? also cpu speed and ram.
the 1hr 15min average i quoted is with pentium p4 3.06Ghz HT CPU over a gig of DDR2 ram and writing with a 16x dvd rewriter, i have an 18x writer too but cant find the discs.
when converting with your current set up, come offline shutdown all unnecessary apps, and switch of your monitor, the less power you cpu and ram are using the more it can give to the converting program, also get a good system app like system mechanic or similar that can defrag memory.
Not saying this will sweeten up the speed from 4 hours

but it may help.

my PC is a 1.4GHz AMD sempron, with only 256Mb ram. takes about 3-5hrs to decrypt, trascode, and burn to CD-R. My father uses the same system his having a DVD burner. and he burns dvds in 1 1/2-2hrs with all apps closed running "memturbo"

Most conversions do take a little over 1 hour to convert, and about 10 -15 min to burn.
Another thing you might encounter is the video and sound might be a little out of sync
depending on who ripped the files.
I am still learning Legion so you might want to put up AVI-Mux_GUI
It is a small program that does not install, just put it in a folder. You can drag your
AVI's into it and it will sync the audio to the video in about 15 seconds. I don't exactly
remember where I found it but I think while browsing source forge

I ususlly don't tell anyone about these programs until I check them out and
this one worked.

hi,
this program is working great for me but i have encountered a problem.
one avi i am trying to convert is freezing and an error message is coming up in the log saying, "error while decoding stream". it says this a dozen or so times in the log before completely hanging.
is there anything i can do or is the avi file corrupt? the video plays fine through a media player so it cant be completely corrupt.
cheers for any advice....

Try converting the file using a file conversion software such as 'Total Video Convert'
Even though its an avi and works fine the type of encoding is what is causing the problem.
Selecting another avi format such as xvid or divx should do.
You can also do this by getting the divx or xvid converter.
Then you should have no problem with convertxtodvd.
I love Convertxtodvd.
I managed to get The One Armed Swordsman, The Return of the One Armed Swordsman and The New ONe Armed Swordsman all on one disc.

reply to speed my speed is just under 1 hour usually for slow encoding but i rarely use slow , i use medium the recommended setting which i have not noticed a difference with, seems ok to me . i only use slow speed if its a special effects based movie just in case . medium speed works fine use that if your having speed issue.

Ok, I already followed Legions simple setup instructions of ConvertX2DvD, but no matter what I set it to it will not convert the avi to a format that shows the movie in a view where there is some black space at both the bottom and top of the screen. So far none of the online help files have answered this question. I have tried several avi files including axxo files with the same results, they all come out full screen. So, any experience users know how to fix it? All suggestions will be given a shot at this point.
Thanks for any help.
Cheers!

It's wide screen format. You can use
VirtualDub to crop it off and re-encode the video, should even take the size down a little. Real easy too.

I have converted over 60 AVIs using convertxtodvd. It does use a lot of cpu and the only time I have had a problem is when trying to do something else while converting.
I would suggest to all those having slow conversion times to make sure that it is the only app running and make sure that you select medium encoding which is the recommended setting and not much diff from high.
I only have a amd64 1.8g cpu and I have 1gb ram and it normally takes me 1-2 hours to convert with the ratio running at 1.4 on average.

Thanks for the instructions but, I have a really nub question... ConvertXtoDVD sounds like it only works going from .avi to dvd but, I know there is tons of formats these ripped movies come in. If I have Roxio easy cd creator 10 what formats won't it handle and what program do I use to handle those formats? I usually just stick a blank disk in the drive and Roxio pops up a msg asking what I want to do, which is great but, I really don't know if it is cutting corners on the quality by buring my downloaded movies straight to a blank dvd without converting first... Like I said I am new to this so please go easy :), thanks!

Alright you have made it very clear what programs I need and I went and got them. Then I followed the directions to the T. and it seems that its either not converting very well and I start it and leave to go watch TV. before that I do the Ctrl+Alt+Delete and end some extra task to insure that it has enough. I have wasted 6 DVD-R Disc made by Philips. I have started with ConvertX to DVD. and it seem fine when I put in my Xbox to try and play it and it tells me that dose not reconize it? What could I be doing wrong agian?? Thank you all just for bing here I really like this site!!

hope someone can help ... i have the movies the visitor and the visitor 2 - both in french. both came with subtitle files - the one for the visitor is a .sub file while the one for the visitor 2 is a .srt file.
my problem is that convertxtodvd (which i use all the time and is excellent) works ok with the .srt subtitle file but won't recognise the .sub file.
is there a fix as i love the movie but can't speak french and need the subtitles?!?
i have upgraded to the latest version of convertxtodvd but it makes no difference.
is there a different program i can use?
any and all help appreciated

UPDATE - problem fixed. convert .sub file to a .srt file using subresync which comes with the autogk package

I use convertx all the time with nero and have never touched the settings except for region and the only problem i ever had was movies that were too big
but dvd shrink fixed that. Now that C.X 3 is out i recommend it, new features work well and menus r cool to still takes the same time though approx 1.15

Hey, guys.
Tried twice now to put a film onto DVD but I've not been successful. Everything works okay until it gets to burning the film onto disc.
I keep getting the following: BURN: Write error at 0 (16) - Code 05 30 05 [Illegal request, Cannot write medium, Incompatible format]
Any ideas? I first tried it at burn speed of 4X and the 2nd time at a speed of 16X, but the same result.
Thanks in advance.

Maybe the discs you are using. I had a nightmare with Phillips discs anyway but -R des not always play back on anything else other than the machine that is designed for -R discs try using + R and a different brand.
OK I have a problem as well, I know nothing unusual there. I love Convert X and thanks to SN for pointing me in that right direction but 90% of the time I can encode and burn a disc in 1 hr 15 mins or near on but now and again it encodes in about an hour but then takes 3-4 hours to burn to disc. I think it is mainly with XVid movies.
I have the setting as instructed in the guide and never alter them, I don't create menus etc. is most frustrating.

You know what i use div x player to burn dvds and can put up to 5, 700 mb movies on one dvd, (4.7 gb) and they play in most new dvd players with no converting from avi so thats a differnet way to do it plus i save mad cash on dvds that way. Now your way is a very clean and stable so it should play in all dvd players, thats were my way just falls short. Theres lots of ways to burn dvds, im gonna try this one now he he. so yeah thanks for the tips. Im out!

only thing ide add is that if your 'convertxtodvd' more than one movie to one dvd. dont use the vso burner. after the convert use dvdfab or whatever to make an image file of it then burn the image at a low speed.
ive done 3-4 1.4 gb avi's totaling 8hrs+ onto one dvd5 disk with no problem, unless i dont make an image file and burn too fast.

- Format (Video Standard): NTSC (US,ASIA)
- DVD Resolution: FULL D1 (720*480 NTSC - 720*576 PAL)
- Aspect Ratio: 4:3 (FULLSCREEN)
