Following the death knell rung by EA for Command & Conquer I'm looking for some recommendations of RTS games similar to how C&C used to be. Please don't recommend supreme commander, I think it's crap. Here's a short list of the ones I've liked so far:

C&C all the way up to C&C3. Generals and Red Alert 2 being favourites.
Dune II
Warcraft 1, 2 and 3.
Spacecraft <-- That's supposed to say starcraft
Total Annihilation
Company of Heroes
Settlers (not so much as the others, but I still liked it)

It's not a huge list, but I think it gives you the idea of what I'm looking for.

You mean Starcraft? Coz although the gfx are bad now the game was awesome. If you would try a real old game and turned base then i would advice X-com:Terror from the Deep. As for Rts wel i played some Dark Region which was ok. Also Dune (the last one) wasn't bad only it becomes boring after some fights. Hell i just love Ra2 and Yuri's revenge..... I think Settlers 4 was ok too.

I've played X-com too. Though not terror from the deep. I used to have it but the computer I had then couldn't play it

Go for some of the classics. Microsoft RTS games in the "Age Of Etc" series were very well made. My favorite being Age of Mythology.

A newer title I would recommend is World in Conflict, contains very ncie story based missions and game play similar to Company of Heroes, but with modern vehicles and units.

The Warhammer series are decent; "Warhammer Dawn of War, Dawn of War II (40,000K) plus all of the associated expansion packs.

It needs to be noted that Dawn of War II isn't a pure RTS. There is no base building, even in multiplayer. IMO it's more of an RPG/RTS quirky mix. That being said, Dawn of War II is a really fun game and definately worth the price

I agree with Falcore, Microsofts "Age of Etc" are great games. My favorites would be Age of Empires I and II, but that's because they were the first RTS I played.

Sins of a solar empire, galactic Civ2, Empire earth1 (old is gold) 2 and 3 arent abs aswell, ANNO 1701 and 1404 are great!
Yea those games are all pretty good although empire earth 2 and 3 have too much to be bothered with, if you're looking for some starwars type huge insane battles go for sins of a solar empire, the wars are fantastic, but you can easily pawn an AI on custom maps...(yes the map maker is so childishly easy to use, it take a few minutes to make a super insane easy to defend map.)....anyways enjoy your pick :)...
