Heya darksiders ssmile.gif

my friend has a Aspire 1810TZ and in windows the battery showed up 12hr of battery time (meaning a good 9/10hrs), so he installed Ubuntu 10.4 and he was wondering if there are any tweaks to make it last longer now is showing up 6hrs(meaning would last like 5hrs) witch is a big diference... but still...

i bet some of you have the right tweak to make it happen... ^_^

thanks in advance

I am also experiencing short battery life, windows 7 goes for almost two hours longer than Ubuntu 10.04. I have turned off blue tooth, dimmed the screen, turned off fancy effects and still find it eats batteries. Any tips would be nice!

hmmm... found this: PowerTOP think any good?

Power top is amazing. I use it all the time and it makes my battery life go from 4.5-6.5 hours at a time, depending.

You might want to check on commands to tell your wifi to go into powersave and to turn off things like your ethernet jack and such that you are not using atm. Also not having the screen at the brightest settings helps tremendously.

I've just been having a read through the Linux forum and wished that I'd read a bit more before I posted in another thread. It was sort of off topic over there - this is where I should have posted - doh!

Anyway here it is (I just moved it over here):

There is a known kernel bug which doesn't just affect Ubuntu (it affects all Linux distros that use the latest kernel versions). Although it affects all systems its only obvious with notebooks/netbooks as the reduced battery life is pretty obvious.

There are 2 workarounds (that I know of):
- Downgrade to Karmic/9.10 kernel (instructions here).
- Upgrade to patched Maverick/10.10 kernel (use this PPA)

Hope that helps someone!

Will let you know, thanks. I am going to try the upgrade.

No worries, I hope it helps.

Pls note that I read yesterday (after I posted here) that some (but not all) have found that their cursor does strange things after installing the updated kernel:

I installed power2 and noticed some issues where, under small load (playing a video), the mouse cursor would move very slowly.
Regardless of your experience it may help to post your results on the bug report.

Good luck

PS I downgraded to the Karmic kernel and its been working fine.

Another tip i've come across is to suspend or remove the modules for your pcmcia slot and wake on LAN. Both consume a few watts of electricity.

My t40 with wifi going can dip as low as 9 watts of usage but usually hovers around 10.5 W
