Ok myself am a big football fan and will be supporting England in the upcoming world cup, Now over here in the Uk we have alot of people living here that are not from the Uk.. I have read recentley on on serveral diffrent websites including BBC, that the police are asking local pubs and clubs to take down there England flags and not to wear England T-shirts as it offends and upsets the people that are not from this country...
Now i have never been racist and never will be but i think this is obserd. This is England and we should be able to support our team... Personally i think if you dont like the flags and T-shirts then go back to your own country....
Just wanted to see what my fellow darksiders thought....

yes its a bit extreme to ask them not to put up english flags etc.... i think they are jus tryin not to hav a situation blown out of control.
lets remember alot of drinkin will b happenin......and people get rude when drunk n mite say sumthin to offend others while wavin a flag in their face...
i dont think its meant to b bias... jus a way of keepin a situation from blowin up

Reading what criminal just put i suppose it makes a little bit of sense , but think it will cause more of a situation asking fans to remove flags and t-shirts as CERTAIN fans are out there to cause trouble and once they al had there drink they will target the forgieners as the cause... either way i suppose theres gonna be a problem, just depends which is gonna be the worst...

It looks like someone somewhere may (or may not) have given advice to landlords saying that it would be wise to use dress code regulations to prevent hardcore supporters in pubs who are notorious for causing trouble.
The reason I say 'may (or may not) is that the only actual news site I can find the article featured on is
The Sun onlinewhich I wouldn't consider to be credible. Also they don't give any real details or sources about the supposed letter that was issued to landlords. All the other sites that mention this are chat forums as you linked in the opening post or small circulation newspapers that repeat the Sun's article and credit the Sun as the source.
I'm thinking it's something that started as a dress code suggestion to reduce the chance of violence during live game screenings in pubs and has been twisted and blown out of proportion into a 'Liberals gone mad' type story which has spread like wildfire as they often do.
Without further evidence or credible sources I would conclude that at best it was a slow and uneventful news day for the Sun, at worst it was written in a propagandist fashion to get everyone riled up against Liberals/immigrants/foreigners.......take your pick. Even the Sun article states "These are suggestions to make pubs safer." on the closing line but this theme is not reflected in the forum site postings.

The right-wing gutter press trot out this sort of xenophobic garbage every time there's an international football competition on - & in this instance its just a forum attached to said rag, in any case.
If the
Police genuinely tried to ban flags of any sort, it would be real news - a place of business can insist on any sort of dress-code it wants to, of course.
(& we've debated this issue
before in the racism thread when a similar incident supposedly occured - it was the
Daily Mail ranting on about flags on cars that time)

This is what people want? Thats what they ask for when they elect liberal "public servants". Liberalism at its best. America is getting ridiculous as well.
This message was not intended to offend anyone, this message is a personal opinion and has nothing to do with the website which it is posted on.
Which is why I had to edit and write the following ^^^^

Hi i just wanted to say to "aldred27"
this thing that he said, is wrong: "Personally i think if you dont like the flags and T-shirts then go back to your own country...."
and its wrong, because the police decided that and not the people. U should be angry about the police then.
I believe is completely wrong to do that kind of ban..the policemans becoming racists of themselves and for English people..
If they want to avoid riots they should increase patrolling during the World Cup
i hope u can understand my poor english..
And a little story for World Cup 2006
at restaurants, in the kitchen these r the ranks..
1.Head chef
2.Sous chef
3.A chef (i dont know exactly the term)
4.B chef (i dont know exactly the term)
etc..
I have a friend in London and he was B chef...
the A chef was Portuguese,
and the Sous chef was English,
So when England stayed out of the World Cup 2006..(because of Portugal),
the Sous chef and the A chef got in a big fight in the kitchen, and both were fired...
and my friend got the easiest promotion to be Sous chef!!

Ok.. Just my little addition to the debate..
I am English born but bred in Northern Ireland... most people know of the unique and relevant issues that Northern Ireland has.. I do not want to turn this into a political NI debate as we have plenty of threads about it and I certainly don't want to go off topic but the one thing that sticks in my craw is that this has come up over the years.. whether it's the football or St. Georges Day.. There has always been a "show of colours" issue here since I can remember and even had
The Flags & Emblems Act passed and written into Statute in 1954..
I think that if this happens in your own country you really need to lobby.. protest.. do whatever you have to do .. to have your legitimate right to be English - Scottish - Welsh - Whatever...
The English local governments and councils still pussy-foot around this issue - you guys voted them in - make them accountable for their actions!!
Me personally will be wearing my English shirt with pride - as will all the other foreign Nationals that hit the pubs in Northern Ireland when the games are on.. I don't think the NI fans will give two hoots [ I hope!!]

I hate football and can't wait until the football season is over and when matches are on I stay well away from the city.
I never used to care much about this country but the older I get the more and more I love it and don't want to see it go to ruin. I'm all for live and let live but when we're being told what we can and cannot do in our own country (goes for any other country, too) by those alien to me it makes me angry.
Every time I've been abroad I've always abided by the rules of the country and would never dream of doing what some are doing here.
As for the Facebook thing about England tops being banned - turns out that was a hoax but it reminds me of the small town somewhere in the UK that didn't put up Christmas decorations because it "might offend" alien visitors.

i dont like how this kind of thing always brings out statements like "if they dont like it they can leave" who can leave exactly? because this kind of politicly correct bull crap only ever comes from upper middle class english do gooders who unfortinatly were born here and who would get laughed at so hard by the foreign people living here for being the idiots they are.. having said that its probably a load of bull

We now know that this was all just papers blowing something out of preportion... When i said leave the country - it wasent because im a middle class english do gooder, it just if they are coming to this country then they should not complain about things like this.....If i went to lets say spain and i demanded they take there flags downs in a local pub because i dont like them, i would prob be laughed at and thrown out of that pub... Forgieners living over here does not bother me to some point, but think if they are happy enuff to take our jobs and sit here and take benefiits from our goverment, then they should not complain...

A friend of mine was in contact with a family member in england, and found out that it is correct, the pub where they go, their local has had to take down the england flag, requested to do so by the local constabulary. So it seems that it isnīt just a story put about by Newspapers.
There are other instances where the ordinary things usually enjoyed by the english have been stopped, because it might offend.

This getting ridiculously out of hand....This happened in my village the otherday (actually last thursday) there was hell to pay for it too and the person involved was sacked..A polish Bus driver refused to let a 11 year old kid on to his bus ..Get this..Because he was wearing a England T-shirt....Political correctness gone apeshit! I would say our rules to protect foreigners right has done nothing but reduce our own rights and freedoms...

Gotta agree there knightron, I was told only yesterday by a reliable source that police officers in (damn my memory) i think Devon have been told by their chief constable that they are not allowed to wear Help for Heroes wrist bands incase it offends, ffs makes my blood boil. I wear mine proudly and would take it off for no one.

sorry similar issues but a bit

This is my Country and I'll wear my England Shirt with pride this Summer and if i feel the urge, I'll wave a flag around too! Personally, I've never heard of any establishment that has been asked by the Police to remove flags or bar England fans and I've worked in pubs for 20 yrs. However, I have worked in a few pubs where it was the Brewery / landlords decision to bar groups of men wearing England shirts. These pubs were all FAMILY pubs and they simply wished to avoid the occasional rowdy mob

who spoil it for the rest of us and in more than one instance, when the landlord was cornered and questioned by angry supporters he'd turned out, he blamed the Police for ordering it! While the Police have the right to ASK landlords to take down England flags, I don't believe they actually have the power to ORDER them to be taken down - has anyone been arrested for refusing to remove a flag or refusing to ban customers wearing England shirts? I think not - but someone please correct me if I'm wrong

Offending minorities is a naff cover for Police trying to controll potential trouble "hotspots" IMO, and I find it hard to believe that any minority except the extremists (who should be deported on principle anyway) would actually be offended

Yeh! I've heard the rumour, and that's all it is, really. If the press want to make any issue out of this situation, they are going to, no matter what. It's up to us, and everyone else to ignore it, and hopefully, it will go away, unlike the press....

The football, maybe.....but not the issue started here, I think. I have a lot of Portugese, Romanian and serbian friends in this country, especially around the area I live. They all, bar 1, fully supported England in the world cup. And I might point out, they wore the England colours with as much pride as we ourselves. What does that tell you......It tells me, that it's pure and simple scare-mongoring, on the part of the Press, and a couple of minority groups.....we won't mention which ones....but I figure you all have your own ideas.
