As the title states, do we really need religion?

In most countries the ten commandments are what society is now based on, if you fail to follow these commandments then you'll suffer the consequences - Jail time, Fines, Death penalty, Exile etc.

At the moment I'm on the fence with my legs about to jump onto the atheist side. The reason I'm not very religious person is quiet personal and don't feel like expressing it at this point.

What I find irritating is that certain parties pick and choose which religious aspects to act on. For instance there are passages in the bible that approve of drug use and yet they're banned in all countries except the small portions of the globe where medicinal/recreational purposes are blind eyed.

So, do we need religion to govern out lives or is it just something for Governments to keep us in line?

I myself am Athesist. The reason i am is that there is NO proof and NO evidence of the existence of god or any other supreme beings... To believe in this there must be some testable physical evidence all of which believers have failed to do..and a lot of guess work done by previous humans, concerning nature, which were once thought to be the work of Gods, have been shown by modern science to have natural origins. Thus, saying "God did it" is a statement you'd only hear from an intellectually lazy individual...

Personally i think there are two many religions i mean how many gods are there?

God is man made to keep you fearful and under control. It's that simple. So my answer is No religion is not needed..

Well, assuming the question is "Does mankind need religion in order to survive?" then I'd say No.

If the question is "Does mankind benefit from religion?" I'd say Yes and No.

Yes - Most religions have an underlying set of rules or guidelines that teach man how to live. That's not to say that man could not have developed laws and such without religion, but having a "God" to answer to for your sins or whatever is certainly incentive to follow an honest way of life. A.K.A. Be good or burn in hell.

No - Religion is and has been the basis of countless wars, persecutions, and hate crimes. A.K.A. Kill the infidels or no virgins for you. A.K.A. You speak to God, you burn at the stake. etc etc.

The question is not if any religion is true, but whether or not man needs it.

I'm sure any points made in this thread could be made (& no doubt already have been) in any of the other topics about Religion that we already have - for example this one , this one, this one, or this one.... to name just a few
