Matrix I - was good, but my favorite one is: Nirvana (1997) with Christopher Lambert using liquid marijuana in it. saevilw.gif

And what is your Cyberpunk Nr.1 movie???

Although The Matrix is great, I still reckon Blade Runner (1982) is hard to beat when it comes to tech noir/cyberpunk kind of stuff. Vangelis' soundtrack is just so beautifully in tune with the movie smile3.gif

Just One huh, not Possible as this is my favorite Genre. I don't like the Happy go lucky explorer types like Star Trek with their Federation, one Government and peace on Earth, I just don't buy it. We are to nasty for Utopia. I can't pick just one it would be like picking which of my kids is my favorite. So Here is my Trifecta of maybe not the best but my Favorites.

Pitch Black

Stargate

Escape From Newyork

and oh I almost forgot

Babylon A.D.

And you should consider a separate question for the best film in the cyberpunk off shoot Steampunk and there is no question that one is the Time Machine.
TerraPunks
somebody metioned this before, whats a cyber punk?!?!

and steampunk?

how many kinds of punks are their?!

Cyberpunk, I don't know the exact origin but its the branch of Science Fiction that is usually a dim view of our future. Most books and movies in the scifi genre from the 1940-1960 gave us Utopian Societies far in the future spread out across the Universe, Star Trek is the perfect example or the books by Isaac Asimov. Cyberpunk on the other hand is usually set closer to our own time and shows decaying societies where technology is developing faster than we can deal with it. Most times set post apocalyptic, after a war or plague has crumbled the West into chaos. Big corporations running the world is also a popular Cyberpunk theme.

Babylon A.D. is a perfect example. Vin Diesel's character lives in a bombed out tenement with a market street in front that offers more weapons than food but they have all the handy gizmos like paper maps that are interactive or troop carriers with 3d panorama monitors.

Cyberpunk Heroes are normally not nice guys to start with, they are usually disenfranchised loners who find redemption when they weren't looking. Yet again Vin's character in Babylon A.D. is a perfect example.

Steam punk is an off shoot that is normally set in the Victorian Industrial era where steam power is still the main means of power but has tech that just didn't exist then, computers, time machines, phase weapons... A lot of times it deals with the path not taken /what could have been themes.

Steampunk developed a cult following in art and fashion. Heres a link to alot of cool steampunk stuff like a Victorian Era Laptop and here is a link to a Blog about everything Steampunk

I like the Cyberpunk genre better but I love the beauty of steampunk.

Of course then we have Terrapunks which translated means a punk from Earth in Latin. biggrin.gif

The term "Cyberspace" was coined by author William Gibson in a story called "Neuromancer". While the stories generally involve a bleak future where technology has surpassed man's ability to cope with it, the main theme of the genre tends to involve people linking directly to computer systems by 'jacking in' (ie: some sort of neural interface that allows a person to connect to a computer/network with their mind). With this, the 'cyberpunks' are the societal outcasts who use the technology to hack into large corporations for money/revenge/etc...

I think that the first Matrix movie is a good example. The only flaw was that most of the story took place in the Matrix World where it resembled society as we know it whereas the world of the cyberpunk is very bleak and impersonal.

Johnny Mnemonic is also a really good example of 'cyberpunk' on film. Granted it may not be great as a movie, the characters and the world they lived in stayed very true to the genre.

Impostor (2001) is another decent one I remember - it's sortof a low-budget one but Gary Sinise's acting makes up for it.

Damn what was that movie called where they hack your DNA.....(Googling "Movie Hack DNA")...ahh yaa Gene Generation.
Great Low budget movie but the story and action paid off...and the characters were really well thought off and portrayed.

The Terminator (1984)

Twelve monkeys (1995)

PH8AL thanks for that explanation, I was unaware of these genres and was even more confused on wich movies fit.
