Yeah, that why freemail addresses registered with genuine street addresses (many sites have software than can check this) but phony names is a good idea; just another layer of security.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, though. I don't see what use could be made of the information; you generally cannot make any legal use of information hacked from an encrypted source. The hacker probably did it just to prove it could be done, and to get some attention for it.

That doesnt feel good though...considering that if they did most prob some anti piracy division could do it aswell...
quickster
but why would they if it's illegal to use info obtained this way

By the very fact that they have hacked a secure site and gained unauthorised access you really think they will then turn around and decide they better not use the information found cause they can't think of a legal use for it?

thats why i dont make accounts on most torrent sites unless it is absolutely necessary

I was thinking mostly of anti-P2P when I wrote that. Of course, the hacker could sell or trade the addresses to a spammer, who probably wouldn't care how the hacker got them.

Yeah - I've just adopted a darknet policy altogether.
I has reservations about even joining this board - but really it's just worrying about a billion other people exactly like I am that have had it with entertainment cartels and abuse of our legal system for profit.

I'm seeding as many GPL works as possible.
There's plenty of hollywood craptastic movies - if that's the best they can come up with - I'll do it myself for free.

This is my no means a very scientific method, but Certain places I have gone I just get a "Bad Vibe" for lack of a better description, and I don't return to them. Pirate bay is on of those places. I am not a superstitious person I attribute that vibe to my mind just putting together all the little clues and making my careful mind uneasy on a subconscious level. Places like TPB, and ISO hunt have historically been prone to poor uploads whether they be due to virus or just crap material like a DVD Rip that has a guys head in the middle of the screen and talking around you. You know what I mean those new crappy cam DVD Rips.

Anyway since the founders of TPB were put in jail and the site was bought by an investment group, yea they are a corporate owned site now, they are probably safer now than ever in terms of anti-piracy groups. I haven's heard so much as a whisper of any investigations or take down notices against TPB since they went Corporate, apparently the rules are different for investment corporations than they are for individuals.

All that to say that it is more likely that, as was already suggested, some hacker just wanted his 15 min. of fame. I would guess it unlikely that he would distribute the information for profit as this could be construed as corporate espionage, felony theft, and a whole range of other charges carrying prison terms. The anti-piracy groups will likely distance themselves as well, forming an alliance with a known hacker for the purposes of gaining material evidence that would otherwise be illegal for them to collect would only weaken their position in court for on going, and future cases. In short it is to nobody's benefit to distribute the information, or even have any contact with it. Even the hacker that did this would be nuts to hang on to any material evidence of his crime against TPB.

I could see anti-piracy groups using similar methods just not in this case. I suspect they would want to be more quiet about it, for the reasons mentioned above. So I really doubt that anything further will come of this, with the exception of possible charges against the hacker.

Just my opinions on it. biggrin.gif

A few POI: The TPB founders are not in jail. They are free on appeal, and I believe none still live in Sweden. There is no reason to think that TPB is owned by a for-profit "investment corporation". The claim of the founders is that since 2006, TPB has been owned by a company called "Reservella" in The Seychelles. As there seems to be no publicly available information about the company, it is most likely just a holding company. The attempt to have TPB "go legal" last year was a pie-in-the-sky scheme of Hans Pandeya, CEO of Global Gaming Factory. It later turned out that GGF never had a hope of getting the money to complete the purchase, and that Pandeya already had money problems of his own. No other sale is on the horizon.

Despite the "going legal" drama of last year and shutting down its tracker last November, TPB is more popular than ever. It has significantly more members and hits per day now than it did before last year's events. Go figure.
