Lords of Cheating: Competition scandal involving high-profile overclockers (vr-zone.com)
QUOTE
This latest news have shocked the entire overclocking community around the world - cheating in MSI's "Lords of Overclocking" competition. This scandal came to light when Pasi_FM from Futuremark pointed out that many winning scores had been made by just one single guy.

The famous overclocking legend AndreYang shared his achievements with Hiwa, eXtremetweaker.de, KJ and Skinnee. All of them had experienced some major problems during the competition and their time was running out; there was a need to come up with something quick. It was their obsession to get high scores that led them to cheat - in the form of requesting from AndreYang to give them his scores. And, he did.

I found it a bit funny that they thought they could get away with something like that, but if AndreYang had only shared his score with 1 person then perhaps it could have worked?

So sad that they lost sight of why we do this to begin with. For me at least, I really don't care If I or we are number one. Of course a little competition is fun, but this is about giving what you can back. This is probably the most important scientific study ever done to benefit all of mankind. That is why we and everyone that can should participate. To cheat at a competition that is really designed to bring recognition to the program and encourage others to join defys the whole purpose of the project and why we participate at all in the first place.

Another aspect, to our team in particular, I like seeing us rise in the ranks and becoming sort of a power team just because I think it makes a statement about what Darkside_RG members are about. Not only do we do what we can to help each other, but in our own way we reach out to help others with what we have. Albeit CPU cycles we are not using. But my electric bill can attest to the fact that they are being used. ShutUp.gif Don't mind a bit as it is for eveyones benefit.

My dad always told me, "Make sure you always give back to the world at least as much as you take from it, and more if you can." That has always stuck with me, it is so simple, yet picture the world we would have if people lived by it.

Cheaters - Release Tibby!

Ummm I agree with you on that, stonehenge00, but this was a regular overclocking competition so not really connected to the folding project, luckily. Though there was a similar upset in F@H as well, last February:

Purging out a bad team 02.08.10, 4:41pm CST

I've been trying to purge out Team FTL from the database today. There's still like 16,000 users and related historical data to delete. The server is really too busy for me to continue it, hopefully later tonight or early in the morning I'll give it another shot.

That team in case you are wondering distributed the FAH client with some game cracks. Needless to say Stanford did not find this amusing and zeroed out the whole team's points.

After I delete all related records, I'm going to have to rebuild the index on the user history table. I have no idea how many hours that's going to take. Again, I'll try to run it in the middle of the night to minimize downtime for everyone.

Tech companies involved in such overclocking competitions should draw some lessons from this, to protect themselves against cheaters looking for free hardware and ill-gotten fame.

I read about that one some time ago. In their case they were actually promoting F@H. In their minds they were doing good by bundling their "Cracked" software with the F@H CPU client. One of the leaders made a statement something to the effect that the people were getting free software so getting the F@H software bundled was a fair trade in his opinion. Stanford of course doesn't want any affiliation with any "Cracked" software, and I believe the CPU clients if running added to their team points not the individuals. It's amazing to me the lengths some will go to increase their points/status in the Folding@Home project. As far as I know you don't win any prize.

I know a few months ago they had a "Folding Monkey" competition. biggrin.gif Thought of you, but you joined just after that. For the purpose of competition you set up a "Folding Monkey", a bogus user that represents the team, then every one contributes under that "Folding Monkey" for the duration of the competition. The team with the Monkey totaling the most points at the end of the competition wins.

Well thank goodness we have or very own Folding Monkey! a022.gif

tongue.gif I took a day off folding, actually, as I had to do some heavy-duty downloading today to use up my monthly volume -- I'll be back on it at midnight, though smile3.gif

Hmmm How is downloading affected by Folding?....anyways, i hate the idea of cheating in something thats for a good cause. It's entirely unethical, but then again these guys just want the fame for having super computers...

There shouldn't be any effect but I wanted to max out my line's speed and that would've conflicted with F@H trying to upload results and I didn't want to risk that causing a problem devil read.gif

The only time I notice an effect is when my spammer checking app does reverseDNS lookups - the worker thread is probably set to a lower priority than the F@H client so it takes a bit longer to do them all. I'll have a look into that soon anyway, though.

Hmmm thats true at one point when F@H was trying to upload results and download new packets it took all my bandwidth and i got disconnected from a gaming server for the lag i was causing...lol
