Full Version: Quick Way To Remove The Edges After Cutting An Image

When cutting an image with Photoshop the edges still have some of the original background showing around the picture. Using the eraser tool works well for blending them into a new background, but it's tedious and time consuming. Is there a quicker way of doing this? I need to be able to cut an image and remove the edges in about 10 minutes, it doesn't have to be perfect but looking at the image without zooming it should not be noticeable that it was taken from another background. The reason I need to be able to do it in about 10 minutes is because one of my employers has hired me to do his photo editing for school pictures for sports. I have to be able to take the student's picture off the background that the photographers use and place it on a new background that uses the group photo as a backdrop. This requires cutting multiple images and creating a new background, the total time to finish needs to be about an hour to an hour and a half, which I could easily do if I could figure out a quicker way to remove the edges.

you could try:

Layer > Matting > Defringe
which will bring up a box where you can select how many pixels depth you want to remove

It's not accurate but it will remove the outline

Thanks, I will try that out. Worst case, I think I will just put a slight glow around the edges of everyone that matches the background.

There is also an option to expand & contract the selection. Like faerie's suggestion you can choose how many pixels you want to move.

ps.
There's also an option to smooth the edges of your selection. I dont have the program on this machine, and I can't remember exactly where the commands are. So you might have to do a bit of fishing. grin.gif

I just downloaded a couple of books on using Photoshop, I figure I should probably learn as much as I can since it's my job now rofl 2.gif I will make a note of smooth edges and check it out. Thanks for the tip drinks.gif

You can also use feathering with your selection :)
TerraPunks
You can put a glow on the outside that is the same color as the background. Also you can use the blur tool to blur out those parts

There is also a refine edges tool, works quite well.
