Full Version: Gaming Has Gotten Boring

Who is with me? I just feel that the overall FPS games have been just all the same. I mean most are just streamlined. What happened to all the different ideas these people had? I mean come on. I only company that I feel is making a effort is Valve. Most companies are now releasing games and launching a couple updates then just leaving it be. At least Valve is continuing support for Team Fortress 2 and other games. I mean come on, Counter Strike: Source just got bumped up to the Orangebox engine. That game hasn't really had a real update in a couple years. There putting the fun back into the older games. drinks.gif

That's something i keep saying..Games are getting really boring...I would love to see a lot of old games redone with new graphic engines. Like Terror from the Deep..
Scorcher
Oh might take another look at Counter Strike, I very much agree. The only game I play at the mo is Starcraft2 even that is wearing thin now unsure.gif

Too many games with the same concept, not just FPS's. Only game I'm looking forward too is Diablo 3. I hope it doesn't disappoint too!

LOL! i think its more about the fact that you've played it all rather than they are getting boring.
I think what is happening is that you play a game and the next game is pretty much the same which doesnt they are getting boring its only that they are repetitive...So lets all play something like Wii or Use project Natal etc...

It's like the movie & music industry: it's cheaper and more sensible to fill the market with stuff that is known to have a bit of success, than it is to gamble on something radical scare.gif

It's also cheaper to push out a buggy game and wait for the feedback before deciding to solve the bugs ShutUp.gif

I am starting to come around from my everything sucks nowadays, to more of a actually everything is totally awesome.

All the time you hear how movies and games are going down hill, I say this just is not the case. It seems like the year we are currently in sucks, yet if you look at last year and think of how many good movies and games were made it is astonishing. The same will be for next year, we think it sucks but will look back on this year and see all the gold it produced.

This has a lot to do as time passes we become more and more aware of the games and movies that were produced that we really didnt know a lot about. Just because 3 or 4 items get a super amount of hype in a year does not mean all the content that year was garbage.

I find that games are getting boring as well. Typically I can not play any game by myself anymore, I need to play the game online through multiplayer to make it any fun. The last game I bought was StarCraft 2, but I am finding that mind dulling as it is mine mine mine, build and rush. The single player is kind of fun, but eh I feel like I am going back to Team Fortress 2.
FPS does seem to keep the same, but how much can you change a FPS? They are all typically the same (which I why I have not bought any others since TF2 was 2 dollars(usd)).
pharohbender
i never bought games but now use steam and sometimes the specials pop up for 4.95 like monkey island and i just have to buy the classics which bring me a smile some old games on there really mix it up so i dont get bored playing the same games, i have also completed the single player games like crysis and continue the next one so i enjoy the story line as well, next up will be assasins creed 1 2 and 3. a013.gif
also playing sport games as well like f1 2010 graphics amazing, pes 2010 always good to jump on with a mate and kick a couple of crazy goals.

but remember if your getting bored pick up a book and start reading it will waste some time, relax you and you may learn something.... then youll get bored of reading and get back to gaming !!

you know what thinking about gaiming i miss playing dawn of war.

Finally glad I'm not the only one. Lately I've been thinking to myself "why am I playing this, it's boring, am I growing out of gaming?" Probably the last game I've ever spent hours playing was Deus Ex: Island of Liberty.

The trouble developers now face is the console world, creating games for consoles and PC is a nightmare. As was evident in Deus Ex: Invisible War and Modern Warfare 2 it seems that games are firstly being developed for consoles and then ported to PC.
Burginthorn
Yeah I feel the same way about boring games..

I think a lot of games these days, esp for PC, are ported console games, which really sucks. Many many years ago I was into Counter Strike something fierce. The early days were awesome and I spent a HELL of a lot of time playing it. It never got boring though, I left CS simply because of the cheaters.

After CS I tried a whole bunch of shooters and never really got the same buzz sadly. Then I thought I'd leave shooters altogether and got into Supreme Commander. For a while I really liked it, but it eventually it got boring too.

I have a cupboard full of titles that I purchased only to play for a few months and then stopped.

These days I have only one game installed on my PC. TrackMania

Its a car racing game, AND its free! Just because its free doesn't mean it sucks either. I am SO addicted to this game I've worked my way up the ranks and now am placed 2010th out of 4,916,976 worldwide players.

In Australia I am ranked 6th out of 68,109 players, and 2nd out of 12,346 players in my home state.

I just can't get enough of it. You can customize your own vehicles with skins. At the moment I'm driving a Nissan Skyline R34 GTR a013.gif

But their is pretty much any and every model car ever invented from vintage to the latest Aston Martin, Porsche and Ferrari. Classic American to European models too.

I like it because its not exactly "track" racing. There are jumps, loops and the competition is fierce, with some VERY gifted players out there. All lap times come down to .0 of a second, so the intensity is right up there.

I am SO happy I found this game, because for a while there I actually lost all hope in PC gaming and nearly went out and bought a flippin console!

I know, there are plenty of people who have consoles and enjoy them, but I'm a loyalist and really enjoy not just PC gaming, but the actual build of a PC gaming machine. Its all part of the process which I greatly enjoy.

I remember the good old days of getting on my knee's and begging the missus to let me go out and buy that $800 dollar videocard, so I could pwn all the n00bs rofl 2.gif

I still enjoy having a top end PC with massive frame rates and overclocked to the maximum. Its just a shame I don't find games themselves have that "it" factor anymore.

I think I'll be playing TrackMania for some time yet ....

L0G
Trackmania is free now? Thanks for the heads up Burginthorn. I remember playing the Sunrise demo a while back and absolutely loved it.

Lucky my ISP has the client unmetered :D.

There are two versions, one is free, the other is pay. Both are identical as far as online fun is concerned.

Many would say don't bother with the payed version, I agree as far as you don't really get anything different from the free if your playing online.

Having said that, I payed, simply because I want to support the people behind it. Its an awesome game and compared to the rubbish I have payed for in the past, I was happy to fork out a few bucks for something I really enjoy.

There is a "Buddy List" in game, so if you download it and join the fun, you can add R34GTR that's me biggrin.gif

Don't know what others think but the boring part is not only for Pc...I own a Wii and that's driving me insane..Got Mario Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong Returns etc...They bloody frustrate me... A other thing I think is a real drag is that most games sold in my country are Steam based...Most of the time I have problems connecting to Steam...So gaming gets even worse....

With Wii by the way there is a new tactic...They started releasing Snes games as Wii dvd releases...Checked the net "Mario allstars", "Tetris Party" when scrubbed they are the same size as the Snes rom version....A whole Dvd for a 20 Mb game...
Burginthorn

If ever there was a word that conjures up feelings of frustration and anger, it would be Steam.

Straight up I refuse to use steam. If a game is released by a company and it uses the steam platform, I boycott that game.

I can proudly say my PC is steam free and I love it. No more headaches and waiting for some obscure update every time I want to play.

L0G
Burginthorn, what's so bad about Steam? Just recently installed the client after purchasing a game.
=Sixpack=
Just tried a demo for Heavy Rain on PS3 and i really enjoyed it,
the detective work using a pair of sunglasses reminds me of Batman: Arkham Asylum, combat is very different though as is the whole game, lots of complicated button combinations but i do like it,very moody and grown up,definatlely a buy for me.

Mostly connection issues, and the fact hitting a games .exe usually leads to updates (of which you have no choice)

There has been numerous times I've just wanted to play. I hit the desktop .exe and steam fires up. Then the BS of waiting for steam to update. Often times I've had to wait 15 minutes just for the freakin game to start.

By then I'm over it and don't want to bother playing. All because steam has to run for me to play is BS. In the end I've chosen to play games that are steam free. Its awesome. I hit the desktop .exe and I'm playing. No updates, no slow connection issues. Just straight into the game.

That's how it should be, and that's the way I like it.

Maybe one day a game will be released that I'll just HAVE to play. And it will run only with steam. Then I'm stuffed and will probably bite the bullet. But luckily thus far, I can still game without steam, and if a game uses steam I'll seriously consider whether the purchase is worth it.

I know I'm not the only one either. When Black OPs was released I had a pre-ordered copy, and was at EB Games at midnight for the big release. Drove home, went to install the game and steam did its thing ....

I did not get to play Black OPs that night/early morning simply because steam was getting hammered and my connection was reading 1.2kbs or some ungodly speed trying to update.

I jumped on the steam forums and OMG thre where so many people complaining about the very same thing.

If that's steam, they can shove it!

I was back at EB Games next afternoon as when I woke up the next day steam was STILL updating. So I returned the game for a full refund.

Oh and it's not because I have lousy broadband speed either.

My router has all the port-forward settings to allow steam and games to connect, and the same with my firewall. Plus steam settings from their own forums all set up correctly. ALL other programs I use have no issues with speed at all. Actually my connection is quite fast.

In the end I can't be bothered with the shithouse program and avoid it like the plague.

thatswhatshesaid
I agree with Burginthorn Steam does have some general issues. LMAO at the Steamy.GIF rofl.gif

I still use it though even though steam feels like it is exclusive.

Anyway, regarding the title "Gaming Has Gotten Boring" I disagree with this, although a lot of new games have similar patterns and the "I can tell what is going to happen" feel to it, a lot of new games are good. I hope the future will bring more creative games and expand genres grin.gif
Kano
as a console gamer(cant afford the equipment required to pc game) i would disagree sure if you continuously play the same genre of game then your gonna get burnt out and see the same ideas rehashed but then all you need to do is take a break from that genre for a while there are so many wonderful different games out there FPS is not the only game type (alot of Cod people are not aware of this a022.gif ) i find that doing this allows me to go back to a game genre and play it again with out the jaded view and the best is when i do go back i more often see the improvements made to gameplay and graphics.
As to just updating an old game with new graphics and not making ANY changes to game play i cant see that working on very many games, the nature of things is progression if developers just start to replicate without trying to improve then the market will stagnate, ok some games just dont work but some little facet may and thats what gets taken and expanded on or added to something else we loose that if the developers churn out graphical updates only.

I've been dealing with games that cannot hold my attention to save my life. Games now seem to lack one thing or the other, its either they lack good graphics, and usually mechanics, or they lack certain engines. Every game i have played probably for the past year or two i found my self disappointed. I just recently beat Batman Arkham Asylum and it was a pretty great game, except it lacked depth. I loved the graphics and the mechanics but didn't like the fact that they didn't include Batman's vehicles. This is just one example of many i have run into. Developers are always going to promise us gamers new games that are better than before, but they wont and i believe the problem is because they've run out of ideas. COD is always going to be just COD, same mechanics with just a few tweaks (necessary? i think not.) Racing games are always going to be the same and never have all we want in one game. RPG's are even getting worse, look at Fable; that game is being torn apart. From the first one (which was a masterpiece by the way.) to the second was a horrible jump and i think just about everyone would agree, now the third is basically the 2nd with a different storyline and a few map changes. Also, new characters and a different plot..however still the same. All in all games have no hope for getting better in my opinion. They can't bring back old games because they'd piss everyone off, and they usually ruin it.

Anyways, just my two cents.
Cheers!

Being a retro game player - I still go back to good ol' Elite

It's probably older than a few members here but it's still my number one 'pick me when I get bored' game..

over 25 years and still haven't made it to ELITE... The gameplay is a never-ending universe to become the best of the best.. It might not have the graphic capability but it has the 'I wanna beat this' grab that gamers expect and pay over the odds for..

I'm enjoying new stuff also - but I'm just sentimental...

I beg to differ. Racing games have come a long way. While I HAVE grown tired of grand turismo (2 was the best IMO) games like Project Gotham Racing and Burnout have added something new and wholly enjoyable. The Burnout series has added something new in each of their games.

I think some companies have fallen into the trap that befell the motor industry in the eighties and nineties. Namely, they're churning out samey products because they know they will sell and make money. They are afraid of making a leap of faith on something original in case it flops. Thankfully the motor industry listened when people complained about the sameness and companies like Ford Europe and Renault (to name but two) did something different and unique with their designs. People liked it and sales were good. Now if only the games companies would take a risk or two as well. I'm sure they'd be pleasantly surprised... if they market it properly.

I recognize games are resembling older style games, trying to bring back games like the Duke Nukem Series. The game is suppose to turn out great, but will it? Medal of Honor is a perfect example, so many promises and nothing came close. Granted they implemented dynamics and features that other games of its category don't have, but not enough to make the game go anywhere. COD Black Ops is selling out everywhere but the vast majority of people I meet hate the game. They say the graphics are nothing what they should have been, but that they do like the bring back of Nazi Zombies. I personally hate all the COD series, and especially Black Ops. From a development standpoint they simply took the same game from before (MWF2) and gave it a new plot. Dare I say worse graphics. Basically this is all coming to why I can't stand playing any new games, however I will rephrase my comment about racing games. Split Second is an exception to that rule because it definitely implements a different style of racing. I like the fast paced thinking and driving. The games not buggy really at all, and the response of the cars is very accurate. Also, I really have grown fond of the drifiting in that game too.

yall do know there are other games out there besides FPS games? and valve isnt that unique. fallout and crysis are just the same idk who started it first but there you go. there are racing games out there which i dont really like, and fighting games, action games. just right now FPS are the hot thing. it wont last for long but it is additive none the less
