well, i just updated my software on my nokia n95 8gb... i didn't get a chance to back up cos it was causing havoc and then when i got it working it updated straight away, and now i've lost all my contacts cray.gif

Anyone know if there is a program for recovering them?

Was your stuff stored on your sim card or on the phone? If it's on the sim card maybe a reader could access it using conventional recovery software. If it is on the phone I think you are probably screwed.

Mind you I am by no means an expert here, I've never recovered data from a phone before.

Good Luck.

Too bad they aren't on your sim card otherwise you'd not have this problem :P
I used to use a n73 and a n95 many years ago and they use a small local drive which is like 80meg or something to store contacts and other info on. Everytime my nokias died from firmware updates or bad syncs or from my own stupidity I gave them to a friend whose mum works at the nokia head office in my city and they restored everything for me. So it is possible, infact there is a whole market out there based on symbian related data recovery tools especially those on the internets, but maybe take it to your nokia store (not a retailer, like the proper offices/tech departments) and see what they can do, as they have all the tools required for data recovery and such. At the very least, I would call nokia and ask them how much it will cost.

That's a bummer, tor-angel sad.gif

Did you ever back it up or sync it with your PC? Then the backup files or the PC program may still hold them

OK, let's try first to find out if the backup file you have is "valid", meaning it has the contacts, sms's files etc. that is expected to be there.

First try to locate the backup file in your PC:

The file extension is xxxx.nbu (if you have used the latest PC Suite to make the backup).

If the backup file is relatively old, the file extension can also be .nfb or .nfc

Normally the default place to store the backup file is something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name, if applicable)\Application Data\Nokia\ContentCopier

If you locate the file, check first that the backup file size is reasonable (I just made a backup of my N95 and it was more than 72 MB), if the file size is only a few kB, it is an indication that the backup file is not valid, something has gone wrong when you made the backup (altough the PC Suite has not warned you about it.)

If you locate the file, you can open the file with for example notepad. You will see that the content is messy, but you can try to use the notepad's Edit - Find with a string that you know , maybe a phone number or first name, so you can see, if your contacts actually are in the middle of the "mess" in the backup file.

Another alternative is this applet that Miksu has suggested to use in emergencies like this:

If you want to try it, you can download it from here:
http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/global...ct_Transfer.exe

Let us know if any of this was helpful. If you need more help, please let us know that is the data you more urgently need to "save" from the backup ?
