October 1 2010 Logonui.exe is located in C://Windows/System32 so I guess it is alright. Amazingly it has now disappeared from Task Manager and I haven't seen it since. Bleeping Computer!!!!

I noticed my computer running a little slower so I checked in Task Manager and found something new logonui.exe . It wasn't there a month ago and I have auto update turned off.

So where did it come from?

According to Google it's in the right folder.

I just don't like things to suddenly start running on my computer for no reason. It doesn't apper in msconfig .
Is it a virus? Microsuck spyware? Homemade hack slipped in?

Don't do anything silly with it or you might not be able to get back into your puter (or at least not without a boot disk etc). Logonui is , well , used for the welcome & logon screens. However, it has also been known as a sneaky name for viruses etc. Basically, if your AV / Malware hasn't picked it up, then it's fine. Not sure why it's showing in task manager, unless you are using fast user switching - not sure - a little off my beaten path of people I do and things I know :) Stonehenge will be along as soon as his wife unties him :)

PS: You haven;t told us what OS you are on or what the location of the file is - so I can;t really comment any further.

Have a read here http://www.file.net/process/logonui.exe.html and http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/logonui.exe.html
Not sure which way to go on this one it's a XP and Vista thing.

Mags. links have a pretty good description of it, and Aequi is also correct. As long as it is located in the sys folder it is ok, the variants will locate somewhere else, usually in appdata/roaming folder, but can be anywhere except the sys folder. system32 for xp and syswow for Vista and W7.

Hope this helps.

Some scheduled maintenance tasks may be going on, perhaps? Or the indexing service that hogs the harddisk can slow things down too devil read.gif

I wonder why LogonUi.exe suddenly appeared? Process Explorer says it started 9-4-2010 but I don't remember rebooting at that time. I was probably using the computer though.
