Vangelis - Counquest of Paradise

1492: Conquest of Paradise: (Vangelis) From somewhere in left field, this score comes. Never before has such great music belonged to simply the wrong film. In fact, this score comes so far from left field that it has left critics of film and music scratching their heads for almost a decade. All film scores are created for the sole purpose of complimenting their respective films, but in the case of 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Vangelis has managed to do just the opposite --an opposite that is quite difficult to obtain. With his synthetic and choral score for this film about Christopher Columbus and his discovery of the new world, he has produced a mass hit on the record store shelves and a completely inappropriate score for the film. It is no surprise that the album, with its surround sound new age contents, has sold incredibly well since 1992 while the film has gone largely forgotten by the international audience.

During the first few months of its release, I heard someone refer to this score as a "15th Century Spanish Bladerunner." And, to a great degree, that person was right. Vangelis' styles and mastery of his electronics have improved since Bladerunner became a cult score hit, and 1492: Conquest of Paradise has a much more complex and satisfying mix of sounds. But his basic repetitive electronic style of composing still remains, and it is certainly odd to hear him throw in some mandolins and guitars just to provide the Spanish emphasis. The most effective aspect of the score is its rich adult choral accompaniment. Together, the score has just barely enough Spanish flavor to identify the period of the film, but the simple dominance of the synthesizers dooms this score for its original purpose. As with Vangelis' other scores, there is no respect paid to changes of scene and sudden cues that don't fit in with his pre-conceived rhythms. In short, it's an awful score for the film; I have seen the film, and it simply sounds out of place in too many parts.

That said, 1492: Conquest of Paradise makes for an absolutely outstanding new age album. Forget the film, forget the fact that this is a film score, and forget that it was a horrendous blunder in its purpose. As an album, it is simply a stunning piece of work. As mentioned before, Vangelis' electronic rhythms and themes are mature and make for great music with which to create an ambience. It stands along side the new age group Enigma as a very accessible sound for film music and general fans to both delight in. The main title track (#2), which appears over the end credits of the film, contains a very satisfying and elegant choral theme that would extend into several sub-motifs throughout the album. With only two tracks that are mostly unlistenable (#9 and #10), the album is a free-flowing atmospheric experience like none other in the scoring genre. It is exactly that characteristic which causes it to be such a delightful album and such an inappropriate accompaniment to the film. Go figure... ****

My pick's an obscure one, but should be recognizable to anyone who's worth his punk rock salt- Decline of Western Civilization had a soundtrack LP, with live early material by bands like Black Flag, X, Circle Jerks, and Fear. I

f only I could afford a real copy on vinyl- but thats why we have torrents, sharing what we don't have 50$ to spend on!
Helios 67
Apocalypse Now hits the spot in every way.

Any of those mentioned were very good, but for me, I have to agree and say Queen of the Damned. I still listen to most of those songs regularly.

2. Brilliant Mind - Furniture

Great track! a013.gif

I would go with the Blade Runner soundtrack (by Vangelis), but Jackie Brown (Tarantino's best movie) has such a large number of previously unknown great tracks that I just need to mention that one too. Of course, John Williams with his endless series of blockbuster themes can't be overlooked too.

Why has nobody mentioned Blade Runner by Vangelis yet, honestly you people.

It's a cracking despair filled ride is that one.

Music to kill yourself to.

Not literally.

You see where I am coming from right ?.

Took me ages to find that bloody question mark key, it wasn't there on the Commodore 64.
