Dunno if this topic has been up b4, i've not seen it. Anyways, we've had best singer, guitarist and stuff, but most importantly, who do people think was the best drummer of all time, and also best drummer still actually playing.
transient
I don't know if he's considered the best by any means, but his style has always been among my favorites. Neil Peart from Rush. Still going in some capacity.
Dav13s
Must admit, i've not heard much of Rush, maybe a bit before my time. Can always dl some to check out more stuff tho. Always on the hunt for good tunes lol
transient
Check out Tom Sawyer, Limelight, and The Spirit of Radio. He has other songs which showcase solos, but this is a better indication of how good he is in relation to the actual songs.

I would agree.. I seen Rush in 2002 and his drum solo was amazing he payed 3 full drum sets while spinning in circles from set to set for over 20 minutes... The guy is amazing.. Hence, the Neil Pert School of Music... :)

I'd like to nominate The Sisters Of Mercy's Dr.Avalanche as Best Drummer a022.gif

That reminds me: gonna look around the web for good drummer-jokes, there's bound to be plenty! biggrin.gif

There once was a drummer from Nantucket.....

Best drummer that still playing today? I guess I should mention Joey Jordison of Slipknot. Damn he's good. And Mike Portnoy, Dream Theater.

Yea Joey is good. I saw Slipknot a few yrs back in Manchester and he did the 20 min solo wiv the spinny round up and down drum riser jobby (idea was ripped off from Motley Crue I think but cool nontheless). It was amazing and I can't imagine how hard it is to play whilst upside-down, spinning round and strapped into a seat with a racing harness, as I can barely play at all lol
Grimmo
Maybe not the best, but damn good IMO.....Rick Allen....the One armed bloke from Def Leppard!!

Gotta love this guy....lost an arm after smashing a car while driving pissed & still drumming away today!

I play drums and the guy from Slipknot ain't all that. I had the same peddle rig he has and could do the same thing. Another double bass drummer with no real style. Now Chris Adler from Lamb of God is a talented SOB. No double basser out there even attempts to play his style. It's tasteful, not the same roaring thump over and over in every song. Half of Slipknots songs all sound the same from distasteful use of double bass. Chris Adler uses his double setup like a snare even going as far as achieving a roto-tom sound from them. That's impressive. I saw his setup real close last summer and his foot footwork is amazing.

The one thing, other than talent oozing on the floor, about Neil Peart is his use of the double bass. Very nice. Not to mention the incredible symmetry he demonstrates. He is proof positive you have to think in four different ways to play the drums.

Can't forget Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews either. He was the jazz drummer for a jazz special that came on every night for years on BET. Watching him play will piss you off if you play. He chews gum the whole time and has a giant smile. A great person too, met him back years ago.

Danny Carey is one hell of a drummer. It seems like he gets better everytime he surfaces to do anything.

Mike Portnoy is another great drummer. He just gets no respect because of Petrucci. But he is awesome live.

And you can't forget Victor Alexander. Studio drummer from Atlanta that has produced every drum track for Outkast. I've saw him play demos in the Underground using several different drums and various percussion instruments.

I almost forgot the man. Levon Helms. Talent from head to toe.

Dav13s
Oh my god, that Stevie Wonder vid is fecking amazing! Doubt I could play that and I can see! I never even knew he played drums. The man's a genius
apexzulu
Dave Grohl Inspired me to get behind a drum kit when i was 14, since then i've established my own firm opinion that John Bonham was best in his day, and i'd say best around nowadays has to be jimmy chamberlain.
if you can read drum music find "darlene" by Zepplin played in 16th's really had me stuck for a while!
as for playing a drum kit upside down well what a gimmick! what he lacks in ability has made up by showmanship?!? I think i'm talking about someone else's post about slipknot's drummer. i'll have to force my to listen to some to see if he is any good, probably just another double peddeller
gimmeshelter
Old school rock-Bonzo & Peart

Of todays drummers, Mike Portnoy is, hands down, the best IMHO.

Next would be Jason Rullo of Symphony X.

I must mention that Joey Jordison is f*cking amazing.

Most underrated=Keith Moon.

Overall, I think Buddy Rich was THE trap set virtuoso.
d3adp00l
I didn't see anyone mentioning Dave lombardo,(Slayer) or Igor cavalera,(sepultura)
these two should be mentioned.
Cody900
Was just about to say that deadpool.

Dave Lombardo is soooooo the best.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQpIpy1xU74 - He's insane.
bluebottle
what about mick fleetwood? or nicko "the brain" mcbain?

there is no question though the best drummer ever to pick up sticks has gotta be the late great John Bonham, ginger baker close second and mitch mitchell in third

wilky
Keith Moon. Undisputedly
Overman
Nick Barker or Patrick Grün... I like both of them.

Barker was the drummer for Dimmu Borgir's album Puritanical Misanthropic Euphoria. I simply love his work there. As if the drums have stopped being a part of the bass line on which the melody builds, and becomes a part of the melody itself. Awesome work.

Patrick Grün is the drummer for a band called Caliban.. a metalcore/hardcore metal band. There's no way in hell anyone could go for an hour set like that and NOT get tired.
tomaraya
saevilw.gif and dave lombardo slookani.gif
pain
I agree with gimmeshelter
check out Buddy Rich cool.gif
Vegitta
I would say Joey Jordison is one of the best there are)))
Wicked_Bitch_ofthe_West
Dave Grohl...but then, I don't know much about drummers. All I know is I get the tinglies whenever I toss my Nirvana in the CD player, and as much as I love Kurt's voice, it's the drums that do it for me.
hello123
i think by far the best 2 drummers that ever was were keith moon from the who and jeff pocaro but if your talking about drummers that are still alive today i would say that simon phillips from toto is one of the best!!!
wilky
mick fleetwood aint bad either. or Chad from Chili peppers
pddnos
Carmine Appice or Ian Paice. I can't decide
Lammy
John Bonham is my personal favourite, but he certainly isn't the best (perhaps he was at his time.)
I get much inspiration from him escpacially for my drum solo's.

I think best drummer is just a matter of oppinion... just like you can't say what's the best car.
missbehavin
Tommy Lee <3
addicted2music
I'm not really into bands but I think the drummer from 311 is great.
villain
Very subjective this so I cast no vote.

I will add an amusing tale though.

John Lennon was once asked if he though that Ringo was the best drummer in the world. In his typical dry manner he replied
"He's not even the best drummer in the beatles"
SupermanGTR
I would choose Joey Jordison from Slipknot.
kria
Past: John Bonham :) love his style and he played like a metronome
Present: Mike Mangini love the time signatures and polyrhythms he includes in solo/group work :D check out some youtube vids :D pretty gnarly :>
Night Moves
I have to say Kieth Moon of The Who. He was an insane drummer. drinks.gif
rodeo123
Phil Collins...... Fantastic
