It's so difficult to decide; but i think the one i can go back & listen to over and over is probably Mudvayne. All their albums are so diverse and the Lyrics are deep; and the Musicians, most notably Greg Tribbet, are brilliant. Their album LD.50 is by far their best work.

Pink Floyd ;)
Their early stuff is cool, while their middle stuff is awesome, and their later stuff is good.

Can I go through this as I've aged?
When I was young (<14) it was The Who and Pink Floyd (this was ~ 1982, to put it in perspective)
Next it was the Rolling Stones.
Then I discovered the wonders of Punk. Hello, Dead Kennedys.
Then, Naked Raygun (we're now at 1986).
Black Flag, tied with Husker Du were next.
Then I was all about Big Black.
Okay...now I'm at college...
Still Naked Raygun, strangely enough...but then I got a really cool roommate who turned me on to The Smiths.
The Pixies, in September of 1988. I'll never forget hearing "Surfer Rosa" for the first time...those incredible drums at the beginning of "Bone Machine?" You gotta be sh!tting me! Genius stuff from Steve Albini!
Then Jane's Addiction (1989)
But I think I made it through college listening to mostly the same, derivative stuff.
Out of college...sorry it took me 5 years, but those were good times!
Listened to a lot of Ministry and Butthole Surfers during this time (1993)
Moved away for my first "career," and listening to a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughn (!), but still staying with the punk classics.
Then I moved to England...merry, merry olde England.
Roxy Music...Manic Street Preachers...Daft Punk...Chemical Brothers (1996 was a good year in England)
And there I remained for the two years in England. I also got into The Cocteau Twins a bit.
The greatest album to come out during this time, and my favorite from this period of my life was "OK Computer" by Radiohead.
Then I had to leave England (sadly) and moved to Alaska
AFGHAN WHIGS...Where had these guys been all my life? I'm swimming in regret (it's now 1998) that I didn't get into them when I SHOULD HAVE (back in college, when I had the opportunity to see them about 10 times, and I didn't).
Travis..."The Man Who" is a great album. Don't know about the rest, but that one sure rocked.
Time to move again, this time to Las Vegas -- The year is 2000
The Doves were probably the greatest band I heard during this time. "Lost Souls" is a perfect album.
I also really liked "Love is Here" by Starsailor.
Twilight Singers (Afghan Whigs offshoot), some U2 (never really stopped listening to them, but they were never really my all-time fave).
I also got more into ambient during this time. I wish someone had told me how great Brian Eno was. Aphex Twin is okay, but Eno rules.
Moved again, back to my Sweet Home, Chicago in 2004
It's lately been all about getting my music collection more well-rounded. So I've been listening to some Bolan / T-Rex, The Band, STP, Alice in Chains, Floyd (I never stopped loving Floyd), back into The Who again, Death Cab for Cutie (better than I thought they would be) The New Pornographers, etc.
But through all of the years, I never stopped wanting to learn about and listen to Mogwai, Keane, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Ramones, Prince, The Pogues, Bob Dylan, The Coral, The Darkness, Smashing Pumpkins, Modnight Oil, Springsteen, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, QOTSA, The Cure, Bowie, Eels, Supergrass, Van Morrison...
I really need to stop here, because I'm going off topic and killing this thread. For that, I apologize.
I'll just say The Afghan Whigs and Pink Floyd.
Sorry if I wrecked this.

For now NIN.
(Is it just me or do I hear wobbling sounds near the end of the The Downward Spiral and at the beginning of Hurt. Is it intended to sound like that? Because I also come across "clear" versions of these songs.)

man good call terraformation. to of my faves. but all time id have to go with The Who, but theres so many to choose from. the pixies, floyd, zeppelin. bedhead, the new year. THE FLAMING LIPS, didnt see them yet theyre amazing. as for instrumental and i saw someone say steve albini up there I'll go ahead and say Godspeed You ! Black Emperor and a Silver Mt Zion. before floyd there was 13th floor elevators. AC/DC is up there. the beach boys, black sabbath, CAN, i saw someone put the smiths, so ill throw in the cure, DAVID BOWIE is a close second to the who, oh man how can i forget j mascis. dinosaur jr, hendrix cant forget the jazz. coltrane, miles daves, thelonius monk, sun ra. OH MAN JOHNNY CASH...joy division....VELVET UNDERGROUND, lou reed...nick drake. damn howd i forget the stones...sonic youth....the stooges.... pavement....Wilco...and one of my all time favorites, its a newer band theyve already broken up and formed the islands, but The Unicorns they blew my mind when i first heard them. these are all amazing bands, some new some not so new, it seems like im name dropping but these all just started flowing into my head. theres obviously more but this is what i got for now. i know im NEU! here but give all these bands a shot and i dont think youll be disappointed.

without a doubt pixies are the band i can go back to without thinking, yes JudgeF15E bone machine is great :a013:
mood wise lately i've been lsitening to the guillemots(who left the lights on, baby is one of the beautifulest songs i've heard, hooked), its happy music for me, also arcade does for me in this mood
when i'm working and need to be creative its the white stripes, when i need just some music, good music it'll be the cribs, be your own pet and the eaves(local band)
for fun it'll be graham coxon ,maybe the specials and half man half biscuit
if i need cheering up the mystery jets and editors
but out of all of them i can go back to the pixies in any of these moods, thus my favourite band
now 2nd favourite band would include the above and many many more

Its really good to see people with eclectic tastes being able to post on a forum and not get totally flamed for their opinions, finally a place on the net where adult conversation rules! woooo!
Heres a few bands/artists/etc that get consatnt rotation in my house:
Tool, Sparta, Mars Volta, DJ Shadow, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Bjork, Plaid, Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, yourcodenameis:milo, Mogwai, Deftones...(I reckon you guys might be able to tell that Tool come top of my pile)
