great info, nice to have free apps good.gif

but don't take all of these too seriously, you have to understand that hackers don't target YOU they target a group of people

they are grouped by OS, programs they use, websites they visit, it's not that you are on the internet, it's what you do with your computer that might make you more vulnerable

and personally i wouldn't recomment the AOL security program as their own websites security is lacking at best. but the rest are well known, quality names

most might know this but an added thing to remember is where you go on the internet is a big thing for example the guy computer i worked on last week spent majority of his time on porno sites his computer was so infected i wanted to go as far as to just blow it up before touching it. I rarely have virus because i am careful about links I click on sites i visit. So if your one those men who are addicted to those sites at least use a separate rig to do your dirty work that way your treasure doesn't get clogged up with dirt.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any software which effectivly blocks your OS type and setup. I've only found one but that a proxy software (proxyway pro) and its a really farce to setup just to block your OS type.

Thanks

Firefox with User Agent Switcher and NoScript use NoScript to disable javascript and use NoScript Options to block plugins flash java etc and block cookies, would be a start wink.gif

Thanks so much for these programs! I was wondering if you know that Btjunkie is offering an isp blocker? It isn't free but if it really blocks my online activities it would be worth it. I am really, really new at this so there is very little that I understand. I am reading guides and I understand some of them, but for the most part I guess I need a guide for dummies. I am retired and i'm enjoying the computer very much, but I want to be as safe as possible. Thank you for all the compassion and guides you have for new people. Cucina

Thats an ok list of programs you have put together. Personally I think you missed a few of the best of the freebie security software, but thats just my opinion. If I might, I would like to offer a few alternatives, but I'm not going to list links as any of these programs are very easy to find using the search engine of your choice.

As with any security type software, there is a large degree of personal choice.

FireFox - Use of any web browser that is more secure than MSIE is a good start.
Spywareblaster - A very good TSR spy/ad ware fighter...as long as it is kept up to date.
Spybot - See Above.
AdAware - See Above.

Peer Gaurdian - Very effective port scan blocker in both 32 and 64 bit versions.
Eset Nod 32 - Antivirus program with 30 day trial. (Unless You Know The Hack)
CCleaner - Mentioned above, but this program works so good, it's worth a second mention.

A few other system utillity programs to help releive the heas aches.

Ace Utillities
Aus Logics Disk Defrag
TuneUp Utillities 2008
Belarc

With all of these programs I just bet you could get a big suprise if you were to search the torrents for them, but I, as a system service technician, would never suggest anyone do anything that would be illegal or immoral.

LOL!

i wouldn't say i was addicted and i wouldn't say i was dirty but i did down a WMV file. Windows Media player has access to the internet. as soon as i started playing the file it went online. i had to pull the cord out of the modem to stop it.
your right, it is dodgy playing with porn but i have found that if it doesn't play on VLC then i discard it with no comebacks.
VLC doesn't have any access to the internet unless you enable it.

PeerBlock is worth a look as an updated version of Peer Guardian. It will run on Vista and Win 7 which i don't believe Peer Guardian did.
