From a purely artistic point of view, which games visual package is the best. This doesn't necessarily mean what game has the smoothest rendered characters or most realistic looking trees, etc. Just which one is best all together.
My choice lies with Shadow of the Colossus for PS2. If you don't play this game before you die, don't worry! God has a PS2 outside the pearly gates, so you'll get your chance.

lol yeah I'm still playing the game, still trying to "kill" the monsters. Oh well for the Most Beuatiful Game I have ever played, I would go for Final Fantasy because of the beautiful cg scenes and characters. Not much with the story lines though...except for FF7 and 8.

The same goes with me..it would be Final Fantasy 7 & 8. After years i'm still playing the game once a while. The story line is brilliant that i like it most.
And yea..Welcome to the Darkside mate..have fun!!

Diablo 1. Not because it had an amazing storyline or anything, but because it was pretty much the first game that really inspired me and made me want to become a gamer.
Cheers - good topic - welcome!

Oblivion was the first game that really had the graphics to grab me. Before I learned to speed the game up in real time by jumping across the "world" I would just let it run in one place. It was amazing in the detail in the sky and the shadows on the ground as time would progress. Other times I would just run across different areas and watch how the scenery would gradually change. So many video games are only set in dark areas. it was nice to see something outside with detailed expanses.

For graphics+atmosphere, I would say Half-Life², although I quite liked the graphics of some areas in NFS-MostWanted too.

From "new" stuff, doom3, followed by fable and oblivion...all very nice tho not requiring insane hardware to play. But I must agree with Anphrax about Diablo 1...the graphics, sound track and the overall atmosphere of that game was simply wonderfull...I even risk to say it's my favourite game ever.

Super Mario Bros, the original. Not because it has high graphics requirements or beautiful scenery, but because it was a stepping stone and it set the bar high for video game makers. It certainly stood the test of time in my book.

I think "Okami" for PS2 is one of the most unpromoted games for PS2.
The game was designed by Capcom's best (Clover Studio).
If u want a huge unique action/RPG game it's a shame to leave this one behind.
check it out @

Games that have blown my mind have been Bioshock, Gears of War, Crysis, Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy 7, Metroid Prime, Zelda: Wind Waker, and Ico. Sorry, just too many of them to choose only one.

I can see that none of you seems to be very fond of my favorite style, RTS.
Nevertheless, i've seen some beautiful looking graphics in some of these games.
So , here goes:
RTS:
- Age of Empires III - Purely beautiful graphics
- Battle for Middle Earth II - No words to describe, as i'm a Tolkien fan
- WarHammer 40k - Dawn of War - Simply the most fun RTS i've ever played . The best storyline, great soundtrack, and really cool graphics, not to mention gameplay
- Warcraft III - If you haven't played this game, you don't deserve to be called a player.
- Company of Heroes - Really good game, with great graphics and sound, fantastic gameplay, only downside to me is the world war theme. I'm a medieval kind of guy.
- Medieval II - Total War - MAN, this is a HUGE game and if you have the specs to run it, you will be dazzled by the graphics and environment of it all
These are just some of my favourite RTSs, because i don't want to get away from the topic of graphics.
Driving Simulators:
- Gran Turismo 4
- Need for Speed Underground II - As far as i'm concerned there's been no good nfs after this one, but i admit i haven't tried pro street yet
- Toca Race Driver III - this is real driving. If you have a steering wheel with force feedback you will feel you're driving a real racecar. My favourite style is DTM
RPG:
- Fable II - the Lost Chapters - Man this has got to be one of, if not the best RPG i've ever played, featuring grat graphics and sounds, and a gameplay style i wish i'd found in some
other RPGs, especially MMORPGs. If you could control your character in guild wars or World of Warcraft like you do in Fable, i thing you could have foud THE perfect RPG.
I just wish the game was a bit longer - Oblivion
- Guild Wars - Beautifull environments
I'll edit this post later and add other styles, because i have a report to deliver today

and it should be done already hehehe.
P.S: I have to agree, Shadow of the colossus has Colossal looking graphics, and it's one of the most beautiful i've seen.

- Great graphic
- Great time killer
- Meeting other people
- Not that much kids in this game
- A lot of races, skills and other things
- Great climate while big pvps, sieges or killing hard Raid Bosses
And a lot more

alot of these games you guys are talking about i would never play. lol
but i have to agree on shadow of collosus, ff7 ONLY, bioshock, Gears.
but im going to have to add Assassins creed for number one, it was just great overall everything!!
as for art wise, id say Viewtiful joe, okami.
all the ff;s and other games focused on alot of general beauty, which i hate. everything can be taken from the world and portrayed beautiful. but scenes in assassins creed, like the ending and the dying mode really sets off the whole game. RE4 wasnt beautiful it was grimey, and cut up, and the most best scary game ever. cant wait for 5.

Now that I've played Crysis, I have to say it's very impressive, even on lowest settings, as that's all I could play with

Most beautiful game I played had nothing to do with graphics. It was the first Final Fantasy for the old Nintendo GS. It took me like six months to finish that.
What I found beautiful was how each protagonistic character in the story grows and how they grow as a group through the years they are on their quest.
As for graphics, The last two Prince of Persia games for PS2 were cool.

Couldn't agree more. Thats a REALLY good game, just too short. I finished the "completely good" game, now im goin completely evil

killed around 1200 guards now haha. There is a game similar thats an mmorpg.. but it's run by a shit company and overrun by hackers.. but anyway.
Prob the most beautiful, feel-wise anyway, i'd have to say bioshock. It actually puts you in that kinda position. Completely graphics wise, definitely Crysis. That thing is a bish to run too.

hmm,, gotta be the Half-Life sequels.. the level design is so perfect and the story is by far the best video game story...
Mafia is awesome too.. it really feels as if you're back in the 30's,, very realistic.. also felt like a movie and a game at the same time.

Agree,
Indigo Prophecy is an often overlooked game. It did a good job at integrating a cinematic movie type story with player inputs.
Another game with beauty, I would recomend
DreamFall the Longest Journey.

Quake 3
the physics engine is simply genius, but the game doesnt give you a good impression when you first start playing it, you have to start knowing its screats and its console commands, then you will completley fall in love with it, online gameplay is sick too on it, everything is fast-paced, instagib-like.
Guitar Hero II

Shenmue (I & II), from the Dreamcast, by the end of it I had tears in my eyes. The character development was extraordinary, the only bad thing about the game was the Dreamcast died and it was never finished. No game before or since has attempted to do what that game did.
Also, Zelda: Links Awakening on the Gameboy, that was the most beautiful game I played (and the first) before Shenmue arrived. It's still the best Zelda game I think, for storyline, gameplay even characters!
