i recently downloaded the torrent: APPLE.MAC.OSX.LEOPARD.V10.5.ISO-OSX and since i'm a pc user i am clueless as to how to burn this to disc and make it bootable. i was wondering if anyone else has this release and any suggestions on how to burn it to a bootable disc. also...it's a dvd-9 and was wondering if this could be burnt to a single layer. any help would be greatly appreciated. peace devileek.gif

OSX leopard, is 7.1 gb in size for the OFFICIAL release, you can't burn this to a dvd5 or standard dvd without finding a way to compress it first, if it is in .iso format, you can just burn it with nero, poweriso, alcohol 120%, DTPro, any of those fine programs will do it for you

as for getting it to work on your pc....good luck is all i have to say :P it's made for mac hardware, and it doesn't always work on regular pc hardware

that file is a dmg file that is like an exe for the pc to run it on a pc you will need the pc version x86 i think and pc with min 2.6 g and 1 g ram
the dmg file is already compressed

A .dmg file is NOT like an .exe, it's like an .iso

It can be mounted just lika a disk on the desktop.
Mazuki
groon is right on this one, a dmg is a compressed image, it mounts like an .iso, and typically contains a .app to run to setup your program or whatever your dmg is for
Wicked_Bitch_ofthe_West
I downloaded an ISO of this as well and couldn't get it to boot on my Mac.
groon
Neither a .dmg or an .iso will boot. You need to make a bootable disk first.

You can either burn the .dmg using Disk Utility or Toast on the Mac, or I BELIEVE Alcohol 120% will burn it on the PC (so it's bootable on Mac), but I'm not sure about that.

Or, if you have an external drive you can mount the .dmg on your main hd, then "Restore" it to a partition on your external drive and that partition will be bootable.
akiyia
Allright everyone here is the answer

you need a DVD Dual Layer +R to burn any leopard image,
Mazuki
akiyia is right you will need a dual layer, but beyond that, alcohol 120% does not support .dmg files

however PowerISO, MagicISO and UltraISO all support .dmg files, along with conversion and editing of those files if you want to do so
Wicked_Bitch_ofthe_West
LOL! I *meant* to say that I had burnt the ISO to disk and had then tried to boot it with no success. I was able to open and take a nice look at the contents, but there was a component that seemed to be missing. Can't remember for the life of me what it was...the disk found cool.gif a new home as a Xmas tree decoration.
Mazuki
are you on an older machine wbotw? as it blocks even booting for some mac computers.....i have a copy of this that i KNOW works if you need it

I have a Mac Mini 1.42 GHz PPC G4. My buddy told me I can squeak by with what I have. I figure that the version I have might not be a good one...at least one other person who dled it had the same result. I'm working on a different one that seems to be the appropriate size.
Mazuki
ok let me know how that goes, if i get enough people asking for it, i'll release mine, it's been tested on 30 machines, no fail.

what you need to do is burn this ISo through the disk utility. Open the utilities folder and then find the Disk utility. Once open it should find any and all ISO or DMG files but if it doesn't you can manually find the file and open it (File:Open file). Then burn it from there and it should make an install disc. This should do the trick. devil read.gif

I am a mac technician, and this works a treat. Please take some advice when I say do not burn to a disc, as Apple has implemented a security program within leopard so that it wont install off a burnt disc, slightly advanced, but I know that it wont work. trust me.

To make Leopard work, simply plug in an external HD, an ipod is ideal (Firewire/USB 2.0)
and goto disc utility, simply erase the ipod partition, and restore the ipod using the downloaded leopard disc image.
When it's done, restart holding down 'option' so that you can see mounted discs (if the ipod does not show up with an arrow underneath like the main HD does, simply unplug the ipod and plug it back in, it should mount and appear on the right with an arrow underneath. Hit the arrow, and it should start the installation as if you were installing from the CD. hope this helps. it helped me!

i am working on breaking this lockdown, and i will see what i can do, in the meantime, this is the fix

I am new to this site and thread.

I have a G4 laptop. I have tried everything above from Mazuki and it does not work. When I hold down the Option Key upon opening, I only see the internal HD, an arrow button to the right of and below the HD icon and a recycle arrow to the left and below the HD icon. The cursor becomes the old clock and continues to cycle and I am unable to even press any button.

I am using an Apricorn drive case and an older 40GB drive installed. The drive is recognized as attached, but I cannot see it when if I use the start up disk icon in preferences. I have also tried various burned DVDs using the restored cdr and the original dmg image.

Nothing works for me.

I only see the cd image and two folders on the downloaded 10.5 dmg. When I restore I see the big X to the left of those three images. When I click to activate, the message is that I cannot install.

Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks all.

well now you have an option to do this.

open disk utility
resize your MAIN partition, so you can create another
create a second partition any size that will fit the leopard install.
mount the image you got from me in my sig
no open finder and choose the Go menu, then Go to folder
enter "/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/"
and run the OSInstall.pkg file, then select the partition you made earlier.

if your G4 is unsupported, there is a tutorial to edit this install DVD to allow it to install on this computer here
a17aron
first off thank you "mazuki" for the upload
i am trying to burn this from a pc to a g4 mac with osx 10.1.4 or something like that (i am new to a mac) and reallly don' t know much about them, all i really do know about mine is it wont do anything because the os is old i guess. but ihave burned 2 dl dvds in poweriso and when inserted into the mac and rebooted ihold down "c" and nohing shows but the main disk. any and all help would be greatly appreciat3d!! my email is **removed** thanks again.
Mazuki
well there's a couple options, you will need either an external drive, or your original OS install disc, it will involve making 2 partitions.

if you can boot to your original install disk, use disk utility to resize your partition, and make a new one, about 9gb, name it "Mac OS X Install DVD"

and use disk utility to restore the .dmg file you got from me to it. then boot to that partition and install leopard, from there you can remove it and use the same method to resize your leopard install to full.

otherwise, there is another method that doesn't require restoring the image, simply boot to the install disc of your old OS, resize your partition you have installed, make a new one called whatever you want, then while the mac OS X install dvd is mounted, open terminal and type this:

open "/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/"

then double click the OSInstall.pkg and install it to the partition you made before
a17aron
and that will work even though when i insert the osx 10.5 dicc it says no volumes can be recognized or something along those lines?

you need to double click the .dmg you downloaded for that to work, once you double click it, it will mount, then go to /Volumes/{name of mounted image}/System/Installation/Packages/

sorry i should have been more specific, where i put Mac OS X Install DVD should be the name of the mounted image you downloaded, more than likely it will be called "NetInstall"
a17aron
so if i burn the .dmg i downloaded to my pc burn that on a DL disc on the pc, insert it to the mac it should then mount and then follow your directions? are macs always this complicated? at first? hehe

no, only the leopard install is, actually burning to disc won't work, you won't be able to boot to it, you will need your old tiger disc, boot to that, then resize your partition

you can open disk utility after selecting a language on the tiger install disc, then select your hard drive, then click partitions, then on the bottom right you will see 3 diagonal lines, like when resizing a window, resize it so there is 10gb free, create a partition there, name it whatever you want.

then boot back to your main hard drive, and double click the .dmg file that you got from me, then open terminal /Appliations/Utilites/Terminal.app

then type this in there

open /Volumes/NetInstall/System/Installation/Packages/ then double click the OSInstall.pkg and install to the second partition you created before.
a17aron
ok i will give it a shot thanks alot dude!! keep up the good work!

ok, i feel like the biggest dumb ass in the world now. i have tried all of the above an still have nothing happening. i have 2 partitions now, and when i double click the "mac os x install dvd" file it gives me the option to continue or initialize or something else? i click initialize to continue the mounting go to terminal and type all that in it says it doesnt exist. im so lost

you need to change "NetInstall" to the name of the disc when it's mounted

open finder after mounting the disc, and the name of the mounted disc on the left is what you need to put in.

or look on your desktop, wherever you have your mounted discs displayed
a17aron
after i monut the image it doesnt show on the desktop, but if i try to open the image again it says the image is already in use

open finder, it may be in there, otherwise, try rebooting to remove it

open a finder window, hit command+, to get the preferences open, make sure that mounted disks, cd/dvd, hard disks are all checked. then they will show on the desktop

more than likely, the answer is NO.

apple was kind enough to put some copy protection so that burned copies will not boot, and sometimes, not even read correctly. the best bet is to just use the .dmg you got from me.

if you can read from the dvd you burned, then try the above method.

if you have just the .dmg file on there and can see it, copy it to your mac, if you actually burned the .dmg to the disc like an .iso file, then try "restoring" it from the dvd with disk utility
a17aron
i guess if apple would have made this easy it would be no fun eh?
lol

First problem: you can't partition a Mac startup drive. I've tried all of the 'suggestions' in the forum. (Please don't speculate solutions-try them first). None work. I did manage to get my system preference 'startup volume' to recognize Leopard from the dmg file, but it won't restart in that system.

It appears that Leopard will only install from a DVD, but it cannot be copied. I assume you installed the legal DVD in 30 machines, not ripped it 30 times.

Mazuki
you can partition a startup drive if you boot to another, i.e. an external with this image Restored to it. or if you boot to a tiger disc.
a17aron
ya, i give up i have tried all the above help and still nothing works. i am wondering if i can somehow network my pc and mac together to be of some assistance?

AFAIK the only way to push the image is through OS X server. the above methods have worked for everyone so far, you could try my post on tpb to see what they have tried.

By "Boot 'TO' another disc", I assume you mean boot FROM. From what I see, the ONLY way to do this is to copy the dmg file to a hard drive and swap drives in your machine. This is just not practical in my single drive eMac.

Again, I ask a very simple question: "Has anyone actually accomplished making a copy of Leopard work?"
Mazuki
many i have worked with have, i have a few replies in here of multiple ways to do this, also, my post on tpb for this problem has been solved and working for many people, you might try there as well
Mazuki
well i will give you my final offer of help. look Here. read all the replies, you will see that there are many many people reporting a working torrent from me, if that does not help, read below for the guides that have worked, and i can get confirmation from them if you would appreciate it. Yes, this torrent is difficult to get work, i was lucky enough to have a mac OS X server at my disposal to test. perhaps you wouldn't mind getting one? it would surely solve the problem here. the real problem though, is apple put in a customer dvd-r protection that has hidden info that readers CANNOT read, or rip effectively to make this bootable.

Well for starters, a burn will NOT work, i'm sorry i reported this in my initial torrent post. and i do apologize for putting that though into the thousands that got this from me, but i assure you, this WILL work if you follow my instructions.

1st option:

If you have a working tiger disk that you can boot from, then put it in and boot from it, when you boot in, select a language and then from the menu bar select Disk Utility then you want to resize your partition, click the 3 diagonal lines at the bottom right side of it to resize it so that there is at least 10gb open. (you can go to option 2 here if you wish) then make a new partition in this space and name it whatever you would like. Now reboot to your os x install and mount the .dmg file of the leopard dvd. after that is mounted you need to open Terminal under Utilities, in the Applications folder.

once terminal is open give it the following command: open "/Volumes/{insert name of image here}/System/Installation/Packages/"

that will open a window with the file "OSInstall.pkg" in it, double click this to start the leopard install, from here, you can choose the partition you created before as the install volume. After that, you can boot to the tiger disk, move files around how you like, and remove the old partition if you feel like it.

Option 2:

well continuing from the resizing of the partition in the previous option, now you want to make a new volume (standard Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Volume) and name it exactly: "Mac OS X Install DVD" (without quotes) then you can reboot, start from your os x install, mount the leopard image you have, then open disk utility, select the image, then select Restore, and restore it to the Mac OS X Install DVD partition you made earlier. then boot from that partition and install over the top of your tiger install.

Option 3:

well this option is a link to installing leopard with your ipod, but will work with any external disk.

Install with ext. disk

i hope one of these helps you, if not, then i'm sorry, leopard just won't work for you, purchasing it is far cheaper than windows, and i would suggest it.

You can partition a Mac to have 2 startup drives. I've done it myself, and it was on an eMac.

you would need to migrate from your old OS install, if it's tiger it should work ok, but there have been many permissions errors when installing from older versions, your best bet is to make a new user, and copy the files manually

Mazuki
i have not tested it from a PC, if you can access the .dmg, and get all of the files out, including any hidden ones, and put it on the iPod, it SHOULD work, though i have only had confirmed reports from mac users "Restoring" the image to their ipod

you need to put your ipod in disk mode to view it as a hard drive (be aware that putting such a large file on it, you may need to remove some music)

Instructions:
CODE
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
