How do I see my desktop when i have loads of apps and folders open, I know I'm probably just harping back to my PC days, but I do find it very handy as I tend to put stuff I'm working on, on my desktop and find I have to minimize everything to get at it. Help if you can.

at the very bottom of the screen, next to start button, there should be a little icon that looks like a piece of paper and pencil. click it.
if its not there, right click next to start button, go to toolbars, and check "quick launch"

option click on the desktop from another program, or hold the command key down and tap the TAB key until the Mac OS desktop icon is selected, then option-cmd-h to hide all other apps. Option clicking the close box on a window closes all windows. Option-dbl clicking the title of a window hides all windows.

Or use
Isolator.
It's freeware, but Apple should buy the code from the developer and build it's functionality into the OS. It makes OSX perfect.

Last serious post was 2008, I'm smelling some serious thread resuscitation.
