Been trying to find a picture, but no go... >> Fedzjean Venvelt (played with A Split-Second during my favorite album: '...From The Inside' )
reasons:
-- fantastic head of hair

(think wide droopy mohawk)
-- excellent (artist-(?)name
-- most likely unknown to you all
The guitarsolos on the album were probably created by different guitarplayers, but that's irrelevant

I was pro-Satriani but after seeing G3 with Petrucci and his solo album....John Petrucci. There's tracks on his solo album I have no idea how he does it. We have a saying around the studio:
"Steve Vai invented the 7 string guitar, John Petrucci perfected it."

For me, being an excellent guitar player isn't necessarily about the flashiest fingers and quickest progressions. That being said, Steve Albini and Santiago Durango (Big Black, Rapeman, Arsenal, Shellac) reinvented guitar in the early eighties. David Gilmour is probably my favorite. But Slash can't be discounted either. Regardless of the fact that he was somehow teamed with the ass-clown that is Axl Rose, he is a genius (and entirely self-taught). I've had the good fortune of meeting, and getting to know Slash for the past three years, and he's one of the very nicest and most down to Earth people I've ever met.

I disagree strongly about Slash ... which is no reflection on his personality Judge, I just dont like his guitar playing at all

Eddie Van Halen and Kirk Hammet really do it for me :a013: And I like Dan Jacob's (Atreyu) style. My mate got the same ESP as him and it sounds insane!

May 6 2006, 02:24 AM
^^Haven't heard Atreyu, personally I am turned off by some of their song names but nonetheless I shouldn't judge a book by it's cover..
Judge you personally know Slash blimey!!! My respect just shot up lol :a013:
I really couldn't care less if he is a nice guy or not, even though you said he is - he plays a wicked guitar and is without a doubt one of the "coolest" performers in the business. Just the way he is so subtle in his performing (well for the most part) is extremely satisfying IMO

While some of Atreyu's song titles are.... Well questionable; I like their Scremo Style. I forgot the guitarist from The Haunted

Very hard to choose, so many different styles. I'm never able to pick the best in this kind of thing.
Saw Al DiMeola once again last year, doing a mix of acoustic and electric. I'm always impressed with him, watching him play is such an education. His playing is so precise, especially noticable on the acoustic, no missed notes or buzzing frets from misplaced fingers and the like.
I saw Frank Gambale play with Chick Coreas Electric band back in the 80's and he certainly is an outstanding player. He took sweep picking to a whole different level, just amazing stuff.
I am a big fan of Allan Holdsworth also. His music is a little more non-structured so it takes some getting into. But he just plays incredible things on the guitar, probably coming from the fact that his musical heros were horn players and he doesn't dwell on a lot of the usual guitar type riffs.
Certainly a lot of other intersting players mentioned in this thread

thats a hard decision, and one i think is unanswerable. if it was a 'Best style of guitar'. eg - Rock,solo,licks,riffs,picking,rhythm,electric,accoustic,tone,tuning...I could got on,My opinion is if ya like the songs then you like that style.
Stanley jordan cannot be compared to Angus young and Gilmour cannot be compared to Van hallen.
Hendrix to Lindsey buckingham or say Brian May to Zak wylde. All excellent players but the differences and infuences make them who they are. If only we could play like any of them!

I think it's impossible to settle on one player really...Clapton isn't my god but his less is more style works.
I like Tony Iommi's work on Heaven and hell
Jake E Lee on the Ozzy track Rock and Roll rebel ....the most fun with feedback ever
Dave Gilmour on Comftably Numb ..best lyrical guitar playing.

Gordon Giltrap Heartsong from Perilous Jouney

that everyone seems to have forgoten.
Ritchie Blackmore Mistreated ...the Rainbow on stage version

the guitar certainly was

might add a few more as i think of them
Joe Walsh on Hotel California
Jerry Garcia on Ripple
Joe Satriani is my favourite, but also i do enjoy the work of Kirk Hammett from Metallica, and the funky work of John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers and last but not least crazy ol' Yngwie Malmsteen.

i'd deffo have to go with Hendrix as the definitive player, but then there's Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains), he wrote some filthy, simple, powerful, wrought and anguished guitar parts. hmmm and then theres Adam Jones of Tool, and i know he's not all that technical but he knows how to rip that d minor scale like no-one else. Personally im not a big fan of the old shredders (Malmsteen, Satraini, Vai etc), sure its cool they can demolish a fretboard but im looking for something a little more, um, i dunno, 'structured' (thats not the right word at all!!)

You May Say Yeah Hes Too Young But This Guy Shows All Critics Hes Just Not Some Other Young Rookie. His Guitar Playing Is Amazing And His Solos Are Nothing Short Of Incredible Thus Earning His Nickname, "Wildchild" Just To Chuck Another Thing In Hes Also A LEAD Guitarist And A SINGER And He Excels In Both Areas Easily. So Yeah Check Out Children Of Bodom And See His Kick-Ass Work! C.O.B.H.C! \m/,

"IT's JOHN MOTHERFUCKIN' FRUSCIANTE!!!" as said by flea at a recent chilis gig that i went to. I must say that in my eyes he is the greatest guitarist to ever walk the earth. How he comes out with so much fabulous music i really do not know. He once stated that he had "enough music pouring out of him to fill an ocean" and there is pretty much no frusciante music i don't love. All of his stuff with the chilis and his solo albums which i would definately recommend to anybody regardless of if you like the chilis or not. There is a John Frusciante discography torrent somewhere altho it is really shitty. I might actually make it so that everyone can experience the legend that is frusciante. (Start off with the album called Shadows Collide With People and i promise you will never look back - one of my favourite albums ever)

I don't think they're the best guitar players ever, but in the past few years, Matt Heafy and Corey Beaulieu of Trivium are amazing considering how young they are. I think some of the less-showy guitarists like David Gilmour and John Frusciante are amazing, because they show that you don't need speed to have good sound.

For guitar playing thats pure soul, its got to be Jimi hendrix.
For guitar playing thats "how many notes can i play in a secound", how cares...
Most of the great guitar players have already been mentioned, and i agree with all of them being amazing. I would like to add Eric Johnson and Robin Forde to the list.

Off course Django
Paul Kossoff (the Free) is also a great player.
and then there's God (Eric Clapton) en his master (Robert Johnson, check him!)
In guitar mastership there's no matching Petrucci, Vai and Malmsteen, but can't help thinking "this could be better"...
Honourable mention for Iommi and May.
The solo on Innuendo is incredible. :a013:

I thought the forum is about "best guitar players." MOST (not all) of the guys mentioned here simply play very loud and very fast. What's lacking is craft. You're not the "best" if you just play a lot of notes really, really fast, or play the loudest and flashiest. What's lacking with a lot of these metal guys is actual understanding of music and the instruments they're butchering. The "craft" is definitely why artists such as David Gilmour, Lindsey Buckingham, Willie Nelson, Carl Perkins, Duane Allman, Chet Atkins, Les Paul and Leo Fender are rarely mentioned anymore in forums like this.

But at least the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame still recognizes true genius...

I've never really cared that much for virtuoso guitar players. often the music they create is more focused on showcasing their prodigious talents rather than, ya know, BEING GOOD MUSIC. That being said, my favorite guitar players are probably the classic 3 of late sixties/early seventies hard rock: Page, Hendrix, Clapton.
