How to join two or more AVI files into one using Virtualdub

Go to http://www.virtualdub.org/ and choose the correct download for your system (32 or 64bit).
There's no need to install, just unpack the zip to where you want to run it from and make a shortcut to virtualdub.exe on your desktop.

How to make a desktop shortcut.
There are two methods. Either right click the .exe file and select "send to>desktop (create shortcut)" or if that option is unavailable right click the .exe and choose "copy", then right click anywhere on your desktop and choose "paste shortcut"

Once you run virtualdub you will be presented with this:

1, From the menu select "File>open video file" and navigate to the first part of the AVI you want to join together, hightlight it by left clicking it once and press the "open" button.

2, From the menu choose "Go>End" like this pic:

3, Now go to "File> Append AVI segment..." like so:

4, Navigate to and select the second part of your AVI in the same way as you did with the first part.

5, From the menu again go to and click "Video>Direct stream copy". Make sure you don't miss this part out or you'll end up with an AVI file of twenty Gigabytes plus, not a good idea.

6, Now you're ready to save. Got to "File>Save as AVI like the pic below.

7, Choose a file name to save as and hit the "save" button. Once you've done that you will see a Virtualdub status window like this one:

After a short time the status window should automatically close. When this happens your joined AVI is complete.

Enjoy your movie a013.gif

kronictokr
very nice just what i was looking for, thank you

anyone know how i can turn bin and cue files into one avi file.or mpeg4-2/h.264
can i use this program?
markII
use Alcohol 120 and mount the bin file then extract the mpeg

also although vdub is a great programme for doing lots of video and audio edits it dont like joining 2 files with different audio bitrate if that happens try nandub

also, if it brings up an error about different sampling etc, use Virtual Dub Mod MP3 freeze, which matches them together...

Thats what i use full stop though, save it throwing errors at me.

Thank you,

Thanks Hash, works well, tho I used VDMod coz it is already in the locker, for avi -> dvd conversion. It also discovers audio vbr skew so you can avisynth your way out of trouble before the encoding stage...and if you do want a guide thats fine but its what I've learned from other guides

Can someone plse do a tutorial on how to go about this plse I dont wanna screw it up many thanx in advance!
Hashishin666
Getting audio but no video sounds like a codec problem. If you make a post in our Technical Help and Discussions forum you will get the answers you seek.

Thanks Hash ill give this a try mate

Thanks for the tutorial! But I also want to learn the opposite: how to split a big video file into 2 equal, smaller files.
Hashishin666
I'm really not 100% sure as to how to do that but You can always experiment. This might work though. Remember that I said might.

To select a section of a video load it into the program and press the home button to set the beginning of your selection then move the slider on the bar at the bottom the where you want to set the end of your selection and press end to set it. Then delete half of the video and save out as avi (change the name) then do the same for the other half. Don't forget the "direct stream copy" part of the tut above wink.gif

Hi guys,

I have a problem, I am currently using the latest version of virtual dub version 1.83, and when I have used your method of appending the 2 AVI files together, what happens is that it turns out without sound and color. Please let me me know what I have done wrong so I can obtain the desired output as it is suppose to be.

Thanks a million
Hashishin666
Though I think it might be to do with mismatched bit rates I don't know how to solve your problem. You should make a post in the tech help forum and some of the more technically minded members will most likely help you solve that problem.

if joining 2 avi's with different audio rates theres an easy fix biggrin.gif

1st open cd 1 and ignore the variable bitrate warning > click file and half way down select save wav > open cd 2 and again choose save wav - you now have 2 audio files with no video and that what we wanted

now download and install this free app CFB WAV Joiner (trial version is free and joins 2 files upgrade to premium for full ) http://www.cfbsoftware.com/wavjoiner/wavjoiner.aspx

very simple app to use just open wav 1 and then open wav 2 and save as 1 large wav

back to vdub open avi cd 1 again and in audio options select no audio > video tab select direct stream > then file tab choose save as avi .... (or use f7) try nameing it noa1 (noaudio1) > do the same with avi cd 2 and name it noa2 (noaudio2) > you now have 1 large wav file with no video and 2 avi videos with no audio biggrin.gif

back in vdub open avi cd1 we named noa1 > then in file tab select append avi segment and add the next avi we named noa2 > in the video tab make sure direct stream is still selected > in file tab select save as avi ....

so now we have 1 large avi file with no audio and 1 large wav file with no video - at this point i would be done because my encoding app's allow seperate audio and video sources but ive no idea what your doing so well mux them back now

open vdub again and open the new large avi file with no audio > in the audio tab select wav audio and add your large wav file > then check the audio tab and video tab have direct stream ticked > then choose file tab again and save as avi ...... biggrin.gif job done buddy there now joined and when opened in any media player you wont notice the join when they play

there are easier ways to do this but since the post is using virtualdub thats how to join - but avisynth is so much faster or even use nandub ( might be old and no longer updated but still fast and handy ) that dont care about variable bitrates it just joins them

avisynth is here > http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Main_Page

nandub is here > http://www.videohelp.com/tools/NanDub

Can I also join multiple avi files (more than 2) with Virtualdub?

Yep yes.gif
bloodchains
So is there a way to combine them all at once, or do I have to do it one at a time?
paulx1
as long as the audio bitrates are the same then you can join 100 parts or more biggrin.gif just keep using the append segment option

vdub is very good at what it does and has loads of extra plugins to do even more but for serious encoders avisynth is a better choice

Sorry didn't realize this was a how to guide.. Removing my comment for it was refering to another method.

Thanks for the info! I always wondered about v-dub in the past, but I was skeptical cuz my cousins (who are major technology geniuses unlike me) always made it sound so complicated, so I never bothered to try because I didn't think that I would be able to do it and not get frustrated, but yours explanations were very thorough.

It's been some time since you posted this (also about around the same time when I first started to toy with downloading and had v-dub recommended to me), but since then and even now, I found VisualHub to do all of my converting/stitching for me with just 2 clicks of the mouse. The maker has discontinued his service, but I'm still a follower to it as alot of other people still are. But I'm glad to finally learn about v-dub. Thanks again! grin.gif
