There all diferent ways to render and select and copy paste etc etc, the list is endless and I don't think any one knows it all, even Burt Monroy the photoshop guru confess's to not knowing anything. Once you get the hang of rendering and filters you will find it easier. I have not been doing this to long but with the help of online tut's and a VTC video I have and of course some friends here I have come a long way, but I practise daily.

Check out my site and do all the online tut's you can find. get your self a video downloader so you can download the utube tut's you find that are helpful.

I have the torrent for the VTC video that go's over the basics of rendering and selecting and masks etc etc.

The picture in the link is done by cutting one picture and putting it on another and playing with opacity and probably a lot more.

If you want the training video I'll send it to you, well I will send it any way, just mount it like you did the CS3 install and away you go it's got 10 hours of tut's on it.

Get to my site by the link under my sig and check out the tut pages and also in graphic tutorials here I have a post about the adobe total video go there and have a look.

no how you feel really annoying. loads of great stuff tut and all but none about starting you off the real basic stuff

Ok, a quick tut here;

you open your first file yes? lets call it file 1, if you want to manipulate that 1st layer in that file then you need to double click on the layer (i always do it on the little padlock so I dont have the text box open) and then click OK in the dialogue box that appears, you can name the layer then aswell.

Now lets say you have a picture that is part of another photo and you want to add it to the original file (file1).

Open the new file via the file menu and open file, now select the part you want to cut out and via the edit menu click on copy then when you go back to file 2 you can do edit paste or control V and the area you copied will be pasted into file 1 but on it's OWN layer.

You could of also unlocked the second file by following the step I mentioned above (double clicking on layer lock) and then erased the parts you didn't want and then using the MOVE tool dragged then image (render) over to the file 1 just make sure enough of file 1 window is showing for you to drag to it.

remember when making a selection using any of the select tools you can inverse the selection which means that if the dotted lines are around a object and only that object then that is what is selected but if you select "inverse" from the select menu you will see the dotted lines are now also round the whole document which means that everything apart from the object is selected, this is handy when you want to reverse the selection which you will find you have to do often enough.

You can also drag layers under and on top of each other, sometimes it is better to put a copied object under a layer and lower the top layer opacity and with a soft brush at low opacity slowly rub out part of the top layer top reveal the object underneath and then increase the opacity of the top layer. You can also use refine edge and feather but I think for now you have enough to contend with

There is tons and tons of stuff to learn more and the video I sent to you will be valuable source of info for a beginner.

And it all seems a bit daunting now but in a couple of months you'll be laughing.

I hope the above has made sense to you and helps you out a bit.
