OK here goes, Photoshop uses many plugins etc. brushes, patterns styles and the likes. I propose to put the pick of the crop here for general download so that noobs have early sources for good stuff. As a good brush or pattern can transform the picture.

1 with Photoshop brushes, once loaded into photoshop right click on their logo brush and delete it, this will be repeated with each pattern of theirs usually that you download. It is a simple thing to spend a little time to remove it given the good brushes you get for free.

TO LOAD A PATTERN
File >> New.
Right click on a layer in the Layer Pallet >> Blending Options.
Click Pattern Overlay in the left hand list.
Click on the arrow next to the Pattern Preview (make sure the layer is not completely transparent otherwise this arrow will be unclickable).
Click on the arrow in the drop down pattern select.
Click Load Pattern, locate your file, hit OK!

TO LOAD A BRUSH
Hit B on the keyboard while in PS (or click the brush button 4th down on the right in the tool sidebar).
Click on the arrow next to the Brush Preview in the top bar.
Click the little arrow next to the Master Diameter in the drop down brush select.
Click Load Brushes, browse for your file hit OK and the rest is history.
Hope that helps for anyone new or anyone in search of inspiration for brushes.

TO MAKE A BRUSH
Make a shape and select it (either Lasso it or Magical Wand it).
Got to the drop down menu in which the load brushes was located (see above) and hit New Brush Preset.
Name your brush, hit OK, and voila, the shape is now a brush and is now saved in your brush library for use whenever.

I would just like to add this to Teebs excellent Guide.

Firstly never pay for brushes unless you have more money than sense. There are loads of great free brush sites.

There really is no need to delete any brushes that come with photoshop and once deleted there gone for good.

When you download your brush pack it will probably be in a zip/rar file. First make your self a new folder on your c: drive or wherever, and call it photoshop brushes.

Next save your zip/rar files to this folder and unzip/unrar. Now make a second sub folder here and call it brushes. Cut and paste all the brush packs you have just gained into the 'Brush' Folder. Now you have all the unpacked brushes in one folder.

When you want to select a new brush follow the picture below.

You will then get the option to browse to the folder you created. Photoshop will remember this folder unless you change it.

Find the brush set you want and double left click to load into photoshop and they will appear in position 2 of the first picture, to select, resize and use if wanted. Add future downloaded brushes to the same folders in the same way.

If you come across a good site for brushes, post it here! And thanks for the graphical representation ch@os although i would disagree with the non-recoverable PS brushes (reset brushes, as long as you haven't saved as default with them missing, they are still in the program files as well if you can be bothered to look).
