I used to use Paint ( rofl.gif ) and Ulead Gif Animator 5 ShutUp.gif , but someone once suggested Paint.NET and this is one of my first attempts at using it.

I'm still getting used to the idea of layers, and having trouble manipulating images after I insert them (I can't seem to go back later and just select the image I inserted and not the whole layer) but altogether I am satisfied with the results so far.

thanks for the tips... I would like to add that at this time I can't use the "big boys"... my PC is only:

AMD Athlon 800 MHz
448 MB SDRAM (yes the old type not DDR)
32 MB Video card

but hey, I think I'm getting better already check out this new avatar I made

PS - someone did mention to me that Photoshop 7 might work on this old hunk of junk, but I haven't the desire right now to dive into that... I'm cool with Paint.NET... for now

EDIT: Here is my latest attempt at a sig

yes_no_maybe?
I think with them specs your best not to use PS but you could try elements which is a smaller version of PS having just "elements" of the PS. Or you could try PSP (paint shop pro) I have version 8 and it dont use as much resource as PS. With regards to selecting just the parts that are on a certain layer you could try this but remember I am using PS so might be diferent on what your using, I would;
Hold CTRL and click on the thumbnail of the layer and you should see the marching ants around the parts of that layer that contain pixels ie; it's now selected.
Also in PS there is the option to lock the transparencey which means that only the pixels will be effected and not the whole layer.
Not sure if you've got the option to save a selection or create a path but that is also a option in PS.
Hope this helps.
The pic's you have done so far are great! Well done. good.gif

Thanks to TA + J 4 the big up!!!

Hey Jason welcome to the addictive world of gfx.

I have same specs as you at the moment as on the old mans laptop so I use Paint Shop Pro 10 with no problems. It accepts png files and photoshop files as well as PSP.

Keep em coming mate and i'll book you a room in the Addicted to Gfx rehab centre next to mine. rofl 2.gif

Here is the newest sig I made. I tried out PSP XI this time instead of Paint.NET. There are a lot more options, but it seems to me like Corel went out of their way to make it harder to use than it should be. In the end, I may have to use a combination of the two to create the look that I want.

Kept it kind of simple this time

EDIT: someone mentioned that "Jason" is a little too hard to read... so this is an alternate version:

yeah with the avatars I sometimes convert parts of Flash movies I find to video and or Animated gif, it's tough getting them the way you want and keeping the size small enough for the forum... I love Flash movies though

Jason. I've taken the time to scroll through this thread. It's cool to see how quickly you learned, and watching it progress through your posts. Good to see someone taking interest in graphics, and really applying themselves..

-smiles-..big thumbs up from the darkside n00b.
JasonP27
Thanks... I didn't realize I was improving at all, although I do try to learn at least one new technique or tool or whatever with each new design. I wish I had more time to devote to it, but I am involved in so many things, I've never read a tutorial for the program I use yet.
