Akira” was a milestone movie in anime and mainstream animation circles, leading the way for anime to make inroads into Western pop culture in 1988

The new story, which DiCaprio will produce for Warner Bros., ideally would be a two-part epic, with the first movie coming out next summer. The action will move to “New Manhattan,” a city rebuilt by Japanese money.

another classic ruined by hollywood

If anyone gets a chance to see the original on a theatre-screen, do so...it is truly awsome. My local arts-centre had it a few years ago.

I think the less said about the fist of the north star live action movie the better. I really hope this one isn't that bad.

Give it a shot! They didn't kill LOTR, now did they...?

Oh they did. They were bunch of horrible doodoo.

Damn...

Hollywood has produced SOME good films, although unfortunately they were nearly all either original screenplays or adaptions from books. I can't see this going well at all. Allegedly there will be a live action version of Ghost in the Shell as well, which I'm dreading just as much...
masteromegon
ho;;ywood always commits genocide on the best works, but just remember, as long as some of us have the original its legacy will live on
Zenious
its the same all the f'ing time the american movie indestry just tring to cash in on a cult classic
makes me sick why cant those stupid a'holes just leave alone

i think this will flop coz akira was a film of its time
i cant see a live action leaving the same impression on me as the original did
UncommonWolf
pretty much at this point, hollywood has given up hiring writers that have original ideas and have gone to revamping the classics that we all like. i doubt that it's all coincidence. and it makes me mad that the average american actually gives into it and pays to go see them

Oh God! If someone hadn't put this up, I was going to start a thread very much like this. What do you guys think? Is it ok for Hollywood to completely "revision" Akira, one of the most revolutionary animated movies ever? Joseph Gordon-Levitt is rumored to play Tetsuo, and I must admit, he does sort of fit the role imo. But Leo as Kaneda? Ugh. Hope its not another 'Speed Racer'... but I believe Otomo is writing this as well, so I guess there's still hope.

Don't really know who the director is, except that he directed this- http://youtube.com/watch?v=FoyxuCVJCwI
along with another short. He sure hasn't got much under his belt, which is either a real good thing or very, very bad thing (I'm going with the latter).

haha when i saw this thread title, i thought it was about a movie starring leonardo decaprio that would be directed by akira kurosawa. then i remembered kurosawa's been dead for like a decade iseestars.gif

god no, dont remind me of that.

ive wanted a live action Akira movie for some time but decided it would be a stupid idea due to hollywood messing it up.
everytime i think of it i have to think thoughts of Final Fantasy: Advent Children and Transformers to dilute the negativity
and give me hope (or probably kid myself) that this is going to be good... ... but we all know that isnt happening.

The problem is the differences in culture. They are going to warp it so that is fits in with Western culture instead of with the Japanese culture. This in it's self will ruin the movie for the real fans. Where as anyone who has not seen the anime will be to identify with it more. It's not just Hollywood going to mess it up (but it would either way) it the culture as well. You simply can not have an American director/producer for this movie. It will feel alien, and things will be changed to make it no so alien. End of story.

Also DiCaprio, please he could not be in this movie. I think this is a horrid choice, and hope that the rumors are false. If they put him in this movie...It will kill it indefinatly in my opinion, and I wont even bother going to see it.

The director is Ruairi Robinson while he has not done many films his shorts are very good and have faith that hollywood can do it right for once you never know it might turn out very good

This is a joke right?
irkillroy
if it was done in japan I think all of you would be singing a different tune.... and that's probably because they wouldn't murder it on sooo many levels... one of which would be to make it live action.

I would honestly say that if they made it's animation like beowulf and just scaned them in and had them voice over... that would work. live action bombs just like speed racer.
cockroach
Who knows? it might work, Dicaprio has suprised me by how talented he really is. Ill Give it a shot.
Glitchcannon
its gonna be terrible who can improve on the original akira

DiCaprio in a remake of AKIRA??!!!!, utter blasphemy!!!, how would one ever hope to achieve anything close to the achievement Akira was??? The thought of this makes me want to.... evilsick.gif .
DEADxPOOL
...i meen, really?..... WHY WOULD YOU MAKE A LIVE ACTION MOVIE THAT WAS ORIGINALLY AN ANIME TO SOLUTE IT!?!?!?!?!? doesnt it kind of defeat the purpose? man, I HOPE I HOPE I HOPE, pretty much everyone including myself is wrong when we already poop on this movie that will in fact suck butthole... so disappointing, are they really making a live action Dragon Ball movie!? 0_o
