Manga is the Japanese form of Comic Books. It is different from animation as it is printed on paper. Often anime is adapted from manga, many times offering nothing new in terms of the plot but leaving things out. Anime adapted from long manga series that are ongoing at the time of the anime's creation often have "fillers" used to keep the audience entertained while the manga gets further along in the storyline as to not run out of plot in the anime. (as seen with the very popular Naruto and Bleach series) Other times the anime is shorter than the manga, has less depth as the storyline is concerned. (such as the Death Note anime where the manga had a much richer storyline but the anime was condensed and left many things out, and the movies adapted from the series had even less content).

Manga is Japanese for "comics", they are literally just comic books. Anime is used as a term to define (Japanese) animated videos. Animes are often adaptions or base don mangas.

Edit: Affinity said it better....
