As the title says, what is your favorite manga and why?
*You should provide enough evidence to support your claim without posting spoilers in case someone decides to pick up a series you have chosen as your favorite.

Those would definetly be Full Metal Alchemist, Gantz, Highschool of the dead or battle royal(e?).
Full Metal Alchemist is something I love because of the humour it presents. Minor negative thing is that the drawing style is pretty bad.
Gantz just because it has maintained my intrest with those clever plot twists. It also is one of the only manga where I have seen myself attaching to the characters. In this manga you never know who is about to go (as in die) next.
Highschool of the dead is too hentai-ish, too childish and too stupid... But every time new chapter comes, I'm full of joy. This is odd and funny, but I love it.
Battle Royale is pretty hentai-ish. I mean not just tiny outfits. Full sexual intercourse.
...But the story and the way it has been drawned makes it all better. It has to have the best story I have seen and it is clearly winner of the best art. So meny details in just one picture! It is almost like a painting in every page!
Those are the ones I can say for sure.

'Battle Royale' is pretty damn good...yes, it gets a bit lurid, however the plot and the issues it touches on are superb. I saw the movie first, then read the novel...and then pestered the poor guy in my local comix shop every month until I had the full set of the manga (there was a massive gap between issues 14 and 15 in the U.K - 4 or 5 months!)
The sequal is pretty poor (movie)..I don't know if there is a manga.
I enjoyed 'Crying Freeman' & also 'Lady Snowblood'
Hmm...it appears I am a big fan of sex and violence (in comix)

You might wanna read Ichi the Killer too :D
It has sex, violence, awesome plots and a lot of psychos.
Also, you should try Sanctuary too, it's drawn by the same guy who drew Crying Freeman, and also Strain (same story)

These are some of my favourites.
Homonculis (ホムンクルス) - Awesome mind-bending madness from the same guy who wrote 'Ichi the Killer'.
GO - Originally a novel, then film, then manga. Film is really good. Story about a North Korean born and raised in Japan trying to figure out who he is. An amazing story with interesting social commentaries.
HUNTERXHUNTER - By the artist who wrote 'Yu-Yu Hakushyo'. This series is still continuing, but has had numerous problems due to the author's personal problems.
Nin-ku (忍空) - Amazing Ninja manga. Before Naruto, there was 'Nin-ku'. A new series of this manga has started recently, a prequel to the original series.
Shi-doh (士道,) - 'Rock 'n' Roll Samurai'. Same author as 'Alive'.
Fullmetal Alchemist
Shinjyuku Swan (新宿スワン) - Follows the life of a Shinjyuku 'Scoutman' and the world that they inhabit.
Gantz - A must see.
Slam Dunk - Defined an era in Japan and made basketball really popular in the country. This artist has a series out now called Vagabond. One of Japan's best artists.
Zetman - Great superhero manga reminiscent of western superheroe comics.
One Piece
Bleach
Naruto
Berserk (ベルセルク)
Dragonball, DBZ
Recca's Flame (烈火の炎)
Ichi the Killer (殺し屋1) - You think the movie was fucked up? The manga will blow your mind!
Kingdom (キングダム) - Story of Shin a slave who now by some twist of fate serves the young emperor trying to unite China. Set in feudal China, Shin's dream is to become a great Army General.
RAINBOW - 二舎六房の七人 - Set in post war Japan, this emotional story follows a group of teenagers thrown into a prison, and the bond which develops between all of them. A personal favourite.
Angel Legend (エンジェル伝説) - Hilarious manga about a teenager who has a personality like a true saint but tragically misunderstood due to his looks.
Magical Taruruuto (まじかる☆タルるートくん) - Honmaru summons a magicial being by accident one day... Awesome manga.
Parasyte (寄生獣)
Vagabond (バガボンド) - Adapted from the fictionalized accounts by Eiji Yoshikawa of the samurai Miyamoto
Musashi. Same artist who created 'Slam Dunk'.
Hajime no Ippo (はじめの一歩) - In my opinion the best boxing manga there is after 'Tomorrow's Joe'. Laugh-out-loud humour and very enjoyable storyline.
Fist of the North Star (北斗の拳) - A legendary manga series which has inspired generations of manga artists, particularly in the martial arts/fantasy genre.
Riki-oh (力王) - Very violent.
Yu-Yu Hakushyo (幽★遊★白書) - Brilliant manga series which rivaled Dragonball at one stage. Artist is currently working on HUNTERXHUNTER another must see series.
Kōkō Tekken Tough (高校鉄拳伝タフ) - Follows the life of the teenage martial artist Kiichi, who from birth has been taught the deadly arts of Nadashinkageryu by his father. One of the best martial arts manga out there. A new series of this manga is currently being released, following on from the original series.
Shonan Jyunnai-Gumi (湘南純愛組) - A sort of prequel to GTO. It follows the life of Onizuka Eikichi and his friend growing up, being bosozoku (Jap motorcycle gangs) etc....
GTO - Great Teacher Onizuka
Boy - Funny as f*@&%, main character is awesome.
Battle Royale
Some I have not commented on as they are already quite popular in the West. Hope you can find these manga in english. Manga Japanese are obviously better, in the original words and text of the artists. But not everyone can read and understand Japanese, so... A lot of manga are not translated that well unfortunately.

I'm going to have to say that naruto is my favorite right now. Just the whole story arc that is happening right now is awesome: pein destroying kanoha, the 9 tails being released, the 4th showing up. Also i feel like we've waited forever for naruto to become super bad ass.....and with the sage chakra he is finally ridiculously good.

Gantz without a shadow of a doubt, though Death Note and Elfen Lied are good.

D.Gray-man is by far my favorite Manga series, if you haven't read D.Gray-man I suggest you head over to One Manga and start reading ASAP.
QUOTE (D.Gray-man Plot)
The series tells the story of a boy named Allen Walker who is able to use an ancient substance called Innocence, and becomes an Exorcist in order to collect all the Innocence that is lost in the world alongside other Exorcists and to defeat the Millennium Earl who possesses an army of akuma.

Battle Angel Alita. Epic story telling and still continuing after 15 years. Series will be coimg to an end soon though. The story is a futuristic dystopian world, mainly during the first half of the 26th century, although there are flashbacks to as far back as the Crusades and centres around an amnesiac female cyborg named Alita. Alita soon discovers that she possesses instinctive knowledge of the legendary martial art Panzer Kunst. My favourite manga at the moment.
James Cameron is directing and producing Battle Angel, a live-action adaption of the first three volumes of the manga series. Cameron has plans to make a trilogy if the first film is successful. Alita will be a CG character performed by an actress. Filming will be made with the new digital 3D system Cameron has developed for Avatar.
Caravan Kidd. The funniest manga I've ever read. Some of the early issues had me in tears. When I want a laugh, I read this.
Crying Freeman. The first manga I read nearly twenty years ago about an assassin who sheds tears after he kills his targets. Crying Freeman is a Japanese man hypnotized and trained by the Chinese mafia (called the "108 Dragons") to serve as its agent, and covered in a vast and complex dragon tattoo. The artwork is spectacular.
Fist of the North Star. Mad Max with mad martial arts skills. Great stuff!
Grey. Another post apocolayptic story with a twist ending for the character of Grey.
Legend of Kamui. Set in feudal Japan, it tells the story of a low-born ninja who tries to flee his clan. The series combines historical adventure with social commentary and themes of oppression and rebellion that reflect Shirato's leftist convictions.
Lone Wolf and Cub. Chronicles the story of Ogami Ittō, the Shogun's executioner who uses a Dōtanuki battle sword. Disgraced by false accusations from the Yagyū clan, he is forced to take the path of the assassin. Along with his three-year-old son, Daigoro, they seek revenge on the Yagyū clan and are known as "Lone Wolf and Cub". The story is epic in scope, detailed historical accuracy, masterful artwork and nostalgic recollection of the bushido ethos.
Lum Urusei Yatsura a fun series of Boy meets alien girl by Rumiko Takahashi. Lum falls in love with Ataru after he accidentally proposes to her, while Ataru is always chasing after every girl he sees, which leads Lum to physically punish him with an ability she has with electric shocks.
Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. Epic story with a philosophical view and explores the concepts of fatalistic nihilism and the Gaia philosophy and struggles with the militarism of major powers. The series contains views of utopia and religious studies as well.
Ranma 1/2. another fun series by Rumiko Takahashi of where the character is cursed to become a girl when splashed with cold water, but hot water will change him back into a boy. A lot of great one liners and gags.

Ive Lately Been Reading And Watching The Manga For F.E.A.R (you know before it became a game)
but all time fave is Death note simply for the character development and character conflict with self/others
But If You Can Get your Hands On The Original F.E.A.R Graphic Novels And Manga its worth the read!
if you've ever played the game you know the story line was kinda F'd but its nothing in comparison to the books and show
Not for squeamish people either!
