i'm not sure what you're looking for in terms of fun software, maybe a few ideas and i could help you better with them

but also, posting here: http://213.155.27.24/forums/index.php?showforum=87 <- will get you better feedback from other macintosh users, as this forum is primarily for torrents

Thanks and sorry if I posted in the wrong place, trying to find my way around...not easy been that I have never "posted" before a month ago. And as for the software, well anything that helps me with web-pages, torrents and I saw some fantastic desktops here that I would love to try...so, icons and photo links would be a great start.

Unfortunately, I am so new at the Mac world, I am already overwhelm trying to learn the basics, but I love to challenge myself.

As to how I use my computer, well not into game except for poker, love music, movies, cooking (would love some recipe program, like gourmet) web development ( basic as I am also learning) best FTP programs, etc..I would be happy to share my knowledge, but I don´t have anything ATM except for my sense of humor to share here.

However once I get more knowledge, I will be happy to share it here. But maybe I am in the wrong place and I am too much of a "beginners" in which case please tell me and I will find other sites....no offense taken.. drinks.gif ....I am pretty good at poker if anyone want to learn? rofl 2.gif tongue.gif ok.gif Thanks for you reply! kiss.gif

type things like 'mac tricks' or sumthing into google and it will show you cool things that you can do on your mac

eg. press ctrl+alt+apple+8 to invert your colours, supposed to make your battery last longer.
hold down ctrl and scroll in or out to zoom

also try searching the apple website for some free software downloads, they might even have a recipe program for you :D

macosxhints.com is a good site :)

also, get a thing called serial box OR KCNscrew (in the mac section) and that should give you a very long list of software you could check out to play with :)

Welcome to the wonderful (if slightly odd) world of macintosh. I've been using Macs at home since the 1st 528k All in one mac.At work I've used macs when I can, but I've done a bit of suffering on PC's too.

In any case, I think you are going to love your mac, people tend to get very attached to them.

Firstly, you only need use ordinary care in regards to viruses and malware. Its been years since there has been any dangerous mac virus. On the other hand, you mac software update app will occasionally suggest installing a "security update" Do it. Macs run on a Unix kernal (don't fret over what that means if you don't know) and can occasionally be at risk to hackers online, but NOTHING like the problems Windows users have. Installing the periodic updates should keep you safe, and thwart any nasty hacker.

I'm going to give you just one software suggestion. Its just a little utility called "X-Assist" Install it and select it as a "login item" in preferences/accounts. all it does is add a menu in your menu bar that mimics the old application menu in OS 9 and eralier. It makes it super easy to flip between apps. You can find it at macupdate.com (and bookmark that site!)

Happy mac-ing! smile3.gif

I noticed VLC in your list of software. I have found that MPlayer is the most versatile movie player for the Mac, you can get it here http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

Some other handy utilities:

Larger files are sometimes compressed and broken into pieces the following can combine and decode

Rar Expander: http://rarexpander.sourceforge.net/Downloads.html
Mac Par Deluxe: http://www.xs4all.nl/~gp/MacPAR_deLuxe/
Split and Concat: http://www.xs4all.nl/~loekjehe/Split&Concat/

The commercial software package Stuffit Deluxe has the same functionality but I still use these shareware tools.

Transmission is my favorite Torrent util I've tried several both paid and free and it is head and shoulders above the rest you can get it here: http://www.transmissionbt.com/

Lastly for this time anyway xAct is a great tool for translating flacs (lossless audio compresion standard) into an iTunes usable format you can get it here: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14246

Just my ten cents worth,

Well, I'll add my list of software favorites for the Mac.

For RAR files, nothing beats UnRarX for decompressing RAR files. It's quick simple and the fastest UnRARer: http://www.unrarx.com/

For media playing, I've found that VLC isn't as dependable as it used to be.

So for all your video playing needs, Perian is the best. It allows you to play any format with Quicktime, so you don't need to install any other media players. I find MPlayer to be finicky and unstable.

You can get the awesome Perian plugin from: http://www.perian.org

For torrents, well the pickings are slim. Transmission has given me problems in the past with corrupt chunks. I used Azureus (now it's called Vuze) for the longest time because I hated all the other torrent clients. Well, the good news is that the new Mac version of µtorrent has been officially released. It's so much faster than other clients and more stable too. I'm loving it.

µtorrent for Mac: http://mac.utorrent.com It's for Intel Machines but some people have gotten reported it works on PPC Macs as well, though it's officially unsupported as of yet.

Well, it's not an official release, it's a BETA release.

Try it, but keep that in mind. clapping.gif

Edit: from their website:

This is beta software, and may contain serious bugs. We think it's stable enough to share and hope your feedback will help us improve it.

if you are thininking of a downloader i would suggest igetter, its one of the best ive found since switching from pc's.
* iSquint, you can use it to change most video to playable files on the mac,
* aMSN is god if you want to use a web cam on msn messenger as the mac messenger is quite out of date
*VCDGearX, to change bin files into watchable files instead of using vlc (and its fast)
* DiscBlaze i use this to burn cd , although you can burn files straight to cd from the mac i find this a lot faster.
*Vuze for mac, torrent downloader, speaks for its self.
*DVD Riper for mac, nice prog for making backup copies of your dvd :) wink wink
most of these i use quite regularly and are great prog, there are lots more prog but i think when you get more used to your mac and start experimenting then may be ask about more programs, only thning i would suggest is to upgrade your memory to the full 2 gig you will get better performance and you will notice the difference if you do, good luck

Hi,
Just a few words and later you can call me if you like ;
The latest HANDBRAKE DOES NOT RIP ANYMORE .
jus stick to TRANSMISSION for downloading torrents. It is the the easiest program to rescue in case of trubble .
