I am gonna try to explain this as best as possible and hopefully Groon you will see this. I am trying to make the picture bigger on the movies I burn because when I watch some of them on a tv the picture is really small, half the size of what the normal widescreen is and I was wondering if anyone knows how to make the picture bigger.

hi d3troitwh1t3y, it depends on what software you are using, most software has an option for you to select the resolution , i take it your making the films into dvd's, what software are you using

If you have a DVD player that supports .avi and they're the ones that are too small, check the settings on your player.
If DVD files (VIDEO_TS) files play back to small, or you want to just resize them anyway, you can use either
D-Vision 3 (freeware):
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16486or VisualHub (out of business, apparently. but there are still a bunch of copies floating around on the web if you look)
There are other tools, too, but those are my 2 favorites.

Edit: DVision3 won't work with DVD/VIDEO_TS files, only .avi (DivX, Xvid, h.264) so you might need VisualHub. There's a thread about it here

not sure about the programs inner workings, but the best resize method is "letterbox" in my opinion, it won't crop the video anyway, just add black bars if needed to fit it to the screen :)
sounds as though your output size is set to your input size, you might want to check the output resolution setting in your program

I tried using Visualhub and I put 1280x1024px in the advanced menu for DVD and when I go to burn in Toast it says the file can not burn. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or not in putting the correct size. I should have put all this info in earlier but was tired cause I work midnights so hopefully one you will be able to help me further. Thank you !!!!!

1280x1024 is too large for a video-dvd, standard DVD's play in 480p i believe (720x480) which is what you should be setting for your DVD
720x586 if you are on a PAL dvdplayer/tele

The reason I put that setting was the movie I was trying to make bigger was 700x300 and on my tv it was only about 2 inches tall and you could barely make out anything! The width was fine but the height was small. Any other suggestions?

what is your resize method, and what aspect ratio are you running on your tele? also, are you playing from a hi-def device?

Ok I use Visualhub and Toast and I try to expand it in visualhub and when I go to burn the file in toast it says " "VISUALHUB_DVD.iso" is an unsupported format and cannot be imported " . Now I am a very very newbie to this stuff and no I do not have any special tv or dvd player spent all my money on a mac and I'll take the mac over a tv any day lol. I don't know what .iso is so I could use help in all aspect's of this. I don't know if I am using the right program but when I first came to Darksiderg Groon recommended it to convert so I tried it but I don't really have a clue so please help. But what I do is put that file in Visualhub and then go to advanced and that is where I type in the size and I changed it from your last advice by not going so big and went with 700x500 and that is when I tried to burn on toast and the above message came up!!! So if you have any other programs to use to expand please suggest cause willing to try just about anything right now

Thanks again and hopefully will soon not be such an idiot with all this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One thing that makes me wonder...
I've downloaded a number of movies in both DVD and .avi format, and I've never had to resize any of them, either playing on a TV or on my computer. I HAVE had to change the settings on my DVD player sometimes, but resizing the entire movie sounds just [plain WRONG. If this has happened to you a number of times, then I suggest your settings are wrong on either the DVD player/TV or the computer (whichever you use to play them back with). I don't think it has anything to do with your burns.
You shouldn't ever have to resize a movie after downloading, unless the uploader didn't know what he was doing, and that should be evident by the comments.
I'll bet either your DVD player or your TV (or both) are at the wrong settings.

Ok well I was wrong to some extent but I had my dvd player at 4:3 letterbox switched it to 16:9 and it is bigger but I like 4:3 because it is a better picture. Now this might be a newbie blonde question but is there any way to make it like a "regular" dvd picture size or am I asking to much? As I have said in all previous post I am a rookie so go easy on me if it is a dumb question because from an earlier post Mazuki said standard dvd is 720x480 and a lot of the movies seem like they are 700x300 or close to that number and is it possible to convert a 700x300 to a 720x480? If not hey I can live with this but would like to know if that is feesable? I am greatful to all and thank everyone that uploads and I am not complaining and thank you Groon and Mazuki cause you guys have been a great help since coming to Darkside so THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!

First congradulations on moving up!!!

Well I do understand the formats (i.e. 4:3, 16:9 and full screen etc.......) but the when I switched to 16:9 it is widesceen but the quality suffers and it is not as clear as 4:3 so I guess I will just stick with a small screen! Thanks again to you both!!!!!!!!!
