One of the best foreign films I have seen is a Spanish film - Espinazo del diablo, El (The Devils Backbone) a supernatural film based around the time of the spanish civil war. Directed by Guillermo del Toro who also directed Blade 2. Not to spoil the plot , it's a story set in a Spanish orphange with spooky goings on involving the ghost of former occupant.

Anyone got any recommendations for any other foreign titles ?

Iphigenia- Greek movie based on a tragedy of Eurpidies by direct Michael Cacoyannis. Agamenon has to sacrifice his daughter because of an oracle's omen, or the huge combined armies of the Greek states will turn on him instead of sailing to sack Troy.

Japanese movie - When the Last Sword is Drawn. Based around the same time as the Last Samurai, but examining the period in a lot more detail. It centers around a poor samurai who does everything he can to earn money and feed his family, even leaving his 'clan' for more money to the disgust of his companions. Wont spoil the ending but its good.

Spanish movie - The Motorcycle Diaries.

I did not like that movie. I read like a 600 plus page of Che Guevara and I really do not like Che Guevara the man, either.

City of God was great, I recommend that Brazilian movie as well.
Glassman
For me, it's a tie between Delicatessen, City of Lost Children & Amelie. What can I say? I love Jean-Pierre Jeunet films.

Short time lurker, first time poster.

If by best you mean most fun...

Recently = "Pan's Labyrinth" FINALLY a good fairy tale without all the sugar coating!

Overall = "Kung Fu Hustle" It’s got everything, great Kung Fu, a love story, roadrunner style comedy, amazing SFX etc. The perfect rainy-day afternoon movie. a013.gif a013.gif

INDIGENES Also Known As:Days of Glory (Singapore: English title) (USA)

- A Morocco-algerian film by Rachid BOUCHAREB
Jamel DEBBOUZE - Samy NACERI - Roschdy ZEM - Sami BOUAJILA

The story

1944-1945... Liberation of Italy, Provence, the Alps, the Rhone Valley, Vosges, Alsace was essential to the victory of the allies... and to establish France’s presence among them after the armistice.
This victorious battle to advance on Germany, after much bloodshed and great losses, was the accomplishment of the First French Army, recruited in Africa in order to avoid the control of the German commissioners and the Vichy authorities: 200,000 men, including 130,000 “indigenes” (natives) including 110,000 North Africans, and 20,000 AfricansةThe rest made up of two thirds “pieds- noirs” (French colonials) and one third young frenchmen who fled the occupation.
The film relates the forgotten story of the soldiers known as “Indigènes” following the epics of four of them: Abdelkader, Saïd, Messaoud and Yassir (le goumier) a mobile corps, reputed for their endurance, ground sense , and courage in close combat. They are sent to the front line.
Each one is in pursuit of a different objective throughout the passage across France which they liberate, arms in hand.

Yassir joined for the booty he expected to collect.

Messaoud was surprised by the welcome from the French. He hopes to marry and live in France, to escape the arpatheid in Algeria.

Saïd wishes to escape poverty in Morocco, and hopes to find a family in the French army.

And Abdelkader who is fighting for liberty and equality, in joining the French army he hopes for France’s recognition, and more justice towards the colonised Algerians once the war is over.

Battle Royale -

Saw this Japanese film not too long ago. It is about this Japanese school class that is "abducted" by the military onto this island under the pretext of some obscure Battle Royale law. The class of like 40 kids has to play a dangerous game, they are left on the island with various weapons and instructed to kill each other because if they do not all of them will die when the collars on their necks explode and they will all die. The military enforces the game and watches over the students. It is better than it sounds, the way the psychology of the students is handled is done very well and that is what makes the movie. Some kids, of course, are friends with each other and refuse to kill each other but when presented with the situation of the game and the weapons present alot of them become "not so friendly" to each other.

Many seeded dvdrips of this movie exist one is even here on Darkside, just search and you will find.
