Was doing a bit of net scouring this morning and found this.

My initial reaction when I saw the headline was, "Hmm.. I suppose this could be interesting." And then I saw who they want to play Spike Spiegel. While I may be one of the few who doesn't totally dislike Keanu Reeves.. No. No. Just.... No. This will be bad.

This is one of those moments when I really want to curse the film industry. With all of the anime to movie adaptations springing up lately, this is by far the one that irks me the most. I just really hope they don't give it the Dragonball treatment. (I really feel sorry for the fans of that series at this point, even though I'm not one myself.)

Anyway, thoughts?

cowboy bebop is one of my all-time favorite animes.... though i very much adore keanu reeves too...
i dont think i could bear to see him in a live - action adaptation of that anime....
they should just let spike spiegel be what he is, the anime version, the cool anime version that he is... oh how i miss the anime... live-action and movie adaptations, could be better left to the japanese, they look more like the animes...

I'm going to be cautiously optimistic about this, if dragonball turns out to be as bad as it appears with its numerous plot changes and bad acting, then hopefully hollywood will take this into account and apply the necessary changes to this movie. e.g. dont mess with anime.
Keanu i think will be a good Spike, Tall Lanky and quiet, he already got the martial art moves down and just needs a massively awsome afro.

I LOVE Cowboy Bebop. and when I saw that before, I thought the same thing. but then I though, it is sooo popular, that they want to spend MILLIONS of dollars to make it into a live action. I think that if they include the original creators in the developing and filming, it might be ok, but not good. there isn't too many live action from anime that have been good, if any. so maybe it will help spark up interest in anime, and then, maybe the Japanese creators will start thinking about some new story lines. I love anime GREATLY, but you have to admit that they use the same story lines ALL the time. but it's still good.

My first reaction was to find a dark corner and cry. I thought, this is going to be Dragonball Z.

But after a moments thought I've decided to reserve judgment. Mainly because of the quality of recent comic book films such as Batman and Ironman. Hollywood seems to be figuring out that what fans don't want is some cheesy cartoony gloss-over of a fantastic story badly acted and under funded.

That being said, Neo is a bad fit because he can't act his way out of a paper bag. Sure he fits the general look of spike, tall, lanky and dark haired, but spike had a strong distinctive personality that Neo couldn't replicate if his life depended on it.

I can only hope that someone at the top realizes the mistake and corrects it before it all goes wrong.

Even with neo it has a chance to be ok... a small, small chance. Just enough to pin some small, small hopes on.
