As this seems to be on everyones mind at this time I found this useful guide for setting up IP filtering in utorrent.

CODE
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2006/05/26/protecting-yourself-when-downloading-using-bittorrent/

I know that some already use, as I do, PG2 but people do sometimes have issues with this.

Hey Stevie a013.gif

When you download the filter can you update the last .dat or do you have to replace each time?. unsure.gif

I am a noob as you can tell by my lack of graphic/artistic flair. so im throwing this out there to see if what i did makes sense or not.
i have PG2, upon following the link suggested, i copied the url listed in the article into the PG2's list manager. pG2 then updated from the link. by doing this i feel i accomplished the same thing as would have been done if id followed the instructions using utorrent. (i did it this way because i have bitComet).
does anybody that knows what theyre doing understand this. validate it.

ive learned alot from reading all of your posts and i thank you much. hope i dont dumb down the topic! drinks.gif
ps: sometime ill figure out how to get all those cool graphics

Since that worked so perfectly, how often is one supposed to update? And honestly I have so much on my mind, I'm sure I'll forget. Some possibility to automatically update? (stupid question?)
Alchemy_RG
Hi Scotte devileek.gif

It is advisable to update the list once a month, so say the 1st of every month do an update. drinks.gif
steviweavi
I update mine every few days and its done automatically using Blacklist Manager.

Went there downloaded and now I'm kind of overextended with the settings.
By the way I'm using utorrent too, but I took it anyway since it says it would be for various p2p's.
Since the IP-filter.dat is also obviously for emule but for torrents too.

Any assistance with the config of that blocklist manager would be highly apreciated. It's not that easy as if I'd do the ip-filter manually (Even though I had to go back to the site for the instructions again, the renaming part said that I was supposed to rename it from ipfilter.dat to ipfilter.dat? Something wrong with my eyes?)

Thanks in advance

PS: I'm really busy, easily distracted (ADS) and I'm fascinated by the possibilities of computers and the internet to automatically do stuff for me. Of course I add more topics to my to-do-list with that too, sigh
Alchemy_RG
the ipfilter.dat works in utorrent but its manual, no auto update, as for renaming i missed it originally too its called nipfilter.dat then you have to change to ipfilter.dat...........dont worry its not just your eyes smile3.gif
FreakNasty
Hey guys, when I download the nipfilter.dat.gz winrar gives me this error meassage:
The archieve is either wrong format or damaged????

Do I have to use a different unzipper?

Is the file damged?

Can anyone post the file?

Thanks for the help.

just rename to ipfilter.dat ...
Scottee
Hi Alchemy_RG,

the missing/overreading happend to me the first time too, but the download from the 25th came already as IP... and even on the website today it's two times IP.. insteadt of NIP...?! Strange, I just copied the new one over the old one and it worked, just not the blocklist manager. Wasn't that the recommendation in some other thread that it works automatically (besides it's not recommended from the developer on their on site) So is it useless for utorrent and I should get rid of it again?

@freak nasty: the .rar file is 1,34 MB, the .dat almost 7, the max upload here is only 300 kb, sorry
FreakNasty
Thanks for the rapid reply guys!!!!

I just thought that I had to unzip it then rename the zipped file ipfilter.

Thanks for straightning me out!!!

Happy New Year to all !!!

Thanks for the help. Okay I renamed the nipfilter.dat.gz to ipfilter.dat.gz

The .gz stays with the rar file. When I follow the instruction on the blog page I don't see the logger
showing the ipfilter on???

Maybe I am doing something wrong but when I read the blog it says to extract the file and rename it.
Am I correct ? When I try it does not work. The .gz stays with the file after I rename it.

I checked that ipfilter is enabled and I also made sure that the file is in the correct folder.

But the file is named ipfilter.dat with the .gz extention??? Maybe someone can post the file on rapidshare??

Thanks for the help, I'm new at this.

From what I gather I don't need to unzip or unrar the file correct?

FreakNasty
Sp4
100% correct geezer

it works, please dont try to use Blocklist Manager as it's makng my ears bleed
Scottee
it works even with unzipping it, it creates a foulder with the nipfilter.dat in it, which I renamed then to ipfilter.dat. Was your way a short cut?

I worked my way to the blocklist manager (why is it making your ears bleed ?!?!?) until it worked but it strikes me as too much effort in comparison to just using the ipfilter.dat manually + it takes too long
Dose808
Does this work with the Azereus client? I'm fairly new to this so forgive the dumb question....

Dose
Scottee
i guess it does since it was originally for emule/edonkey anyway, but works for p2p in general. I don't know azureus, don't some of the clients have it built in?
Sp4
Yep with Az you need to install the SafePeer plugin

plugins/install wizard/by list from sourceforge/safepeer

fairly straight forward to use does it for you, install it if you haven't already
Dose808
Found it and installed it fine....thanks for the reply and help, much appreciated!!

Hi , as you may have noticed the forums and blocklist have been unavailable over the last few days due to the server needing some repairs.

The blocklist downloads are currently working but there will be no further updates again until possibly end of the week, once everything in our database is back to normal. We will let you know when updates have resumed.

For those with an itchy blocklist update trigger finger, the last blocklist update was 9th/10th january, so there is no need to continue hammering the server if you have already updated your lists from that date.

The server may be temporarily down again while we finish off maintenance of some other parts of the site.

So if things stop working again there's no need to worry , everything should be back to normal after a few more days at most.

Thanks for your continued support -

Bluetack Admin team.

thanks for that faerie, but my situation was slightly different

i must've been updating at the same time bluetack went down as all my lists were corrupted and i was left with no pretection, thankfully i got the dat file from bluetack.info so problem semi-sorted until earlier when my pg2 updated - phew

so if i appeared frantic, apologies

i've done everything the initial article instructs, but under the logger tab in utorrent, i receive the following message:
Unable to map UPnP port.

So how can i tell if the black list is operating or not?

thanks.

that always seems to be there, but above it it should say loaded ipfilter......... if your using the utorrent built in one. smile3.gif
Gryphonic
Once the list has been downloaded and processed (1-2 mins for 54% of all ip's) BlocklistManager will auto-export to overwrite the blocklist cache in the Azureus' safepeer plugin and Protowall. Anyone having trouble there I can help but sadly for utorrent, I'm no good to anyone.
