Hi jbfisherking.
I hope that you don't mind me splitting this from the other thread it's just my OCD
Could you provide some further info like what brand of graphics does the box have? Nvidia or ATI?
Also join the
ubuntu forums and don't let people put you down, it has been known to happen

I've also installed this version from 8.10 and I'm having the same problems with lag and crashing. A major problem seems 2 be with the browser going into overdrive mode when all I do is open it and having problems with youtube not playing vids correctly. I recommend you install 8.10 because I've not had any faults with it. I do believe ubuntu has released this far to early. Also the graphics card I'm using just now is the nvidia fx5500

while ubuntu (and any other linux distro) will run better than windows on an older machine, 256mb is not quite enough for most of the stuff you would do on a daily basis (ie music, email and web browsing).
if getting the video set correctly doesn't do the trick (and please, as sp4 said, post the specs of the video adapter, or at least the model of the laptop), you may consider more ram. it's a little pricey for those older p3's, but it is cheaper than a newer laptop.
edit: oops, you mentioned the model, or at least part of it. its the old intel video (Intel 82810 or 82815, I believe).

One thing might be to try disabling Compiz Fusion desktop effects if you have them on (they come on as default) as I found that they lagged my P4 Linux box quite badly...
Try looking
Here for more information on stopping Compiz - I know its for a Dell Inspiron but the steps should be the same...
Hope that helps!

Personally I would look for a lighter distro then Ubuntu, unless there is a reason you really want to run it. I was try DSL, Puppy or something small like that.
