cleaner looking all-in-one install (which looks a little more
professional than AutoGK), also has some extra features like x264
encoding, alternate containers such as MKV and preset setting for
ipod/iphone/psp/ps3/xbox360. If it lives up to appearances, this is

The program is incredibly simple to use. Unzip it (no installation is required), double-click DeviceDoctor.exe, and you're presented with the very basic interface.
Click the Begin Scan button and it checks your driver versions, comparing them with a central database to discover any that have updates available.
Within a very short time (around 20 seconds, on our test PC) a report will appear with a list of potential downloads.

Holy Moses!!! Now THIS is a 'collection' of sites!!

I've been searching around for a or the "proper" A/V program for me. With my VERY limited knowledge it can be, and has been, somewhat confusing. Until now. Well ok .... the truth ... ... may-be I'm still a teeny bit confused, but I certainly do know that I have found "The Spot" to look for ...... well ..... to look for any and every thing as far as I can tell!!

I found my way here by the way, through following a link provided underneath a comment you made {provided by you I assume} on a page where someone else had requested some guidance on which A/V that they should maybe use.

Thank you SO much for providing the link!! And, if it's possable, an even BIGGER thank you for all the time and hard work you must obviously have put in to put this list togeather, and then in turn make it available for all of us!!

This is one 'Newbie' who wants you to know that, without doubt, you my friend are APPRECIATED!!!

You can add two more freewarez that I use, one of them is CCleaner:

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!

I use it mostly to clean my registry when I uninstal something or so, it's very fast and reliable.

And the other one is Netbeans:

A free, open-source Integrated Development Environment for software developers. This is one is for Java programming, I use it in my classes in college, it works great too!

i left cc cleaner off as registry cleaners may cause harm in the wrong hands

There might be a good reason you left them out but you could also include some of the popular linux distros like ubuntu/debian, suse, DSL, fedora etc etc, the list is long. There's a good freeware site here that lists most of them. .

my bad i should have titled it winows apps/utilities,
i was thinking of looking into linux ,as im told its a lot more stable than windows,
i fancy having a play with it

Awesome work on that list mate. You've got some of my favourites listed already. But I do have a couple of others I'd like to propose for addition:

Disk Defragger:
Defraggler - I use this and really like it. You can defrag individual files, multiple files, all files & run on a schedule.

File Recovery:
Recuva - I can't vouch for this one but its made by Piriform (the people who do Ccleaner & Defraggler (both of which I swear by) so should be good I reckon.

System Information:
GPU-Z - Like CPU-Z but for Graphics cards.

Video Applications:
AutoGK - I have used this for a long time. Its a pretty good program for encoding files to .avi. Actually its a frontend for a number of different progs (all packaged together) which it installs (which leads to a fairly protracted install) but works great.
Handbrake - Video encoding/re-encoding software. I just discovered this one, cleaner looking all-in-one install (which looks a little more professional than AutoGK), also has some extra features like x264 encoding, alternate containers such as MKV and preset setting for ipod/iphone/psp/ps3/xbox360. If it lives up to appearances, this is what I'll be using from now on (instead of AutoGK).
DVD Decrypter - An old one but a good one. I still use this lots for doing raw rips of DVD VOBs (before I feed it into one of the above to create an AVI).

File Search:
Agent Ransack - powerful and fast file search utility.

System Tool - Shell Extension:
HashTab - Very handy if you do lots of file transfers and want to check to ensure the file hasn't been corrupted. Adds a tab to the file properties window with the files hash (or signature) information (such as md5 and sha).

System Tool - Tweaker:
TweakUI - Microsoft tool (part of powertoys package) for adjusting a few settings that default windows doesn't allow access to (without reg hacks). Very user friendly. [XP & 2003 only]

System Tool - Fix:
ToolTipFixer - fixes the annoying bug where the tool tips sometimes come up underneath the taskbar instead of on top! (Win95 -> WinXP)

Office Suite: - OpenOffice
OpenOffice is a great free & open source replacement for MS Office. Hasn't got all the bells and whistles of the latest MS Office (pretty much equivalent of Office 2003) but the features are good and the price is right! Features Writer (MS Word replacement), Impress (MS Powerpoint replacement) and Calc (MS Excel replacement). All 3 programs will open and save MS file formats (formatting sometimes changes a little when going one to the other). You can choose to set the default save type as MS style, or use the smaller native odf formats. Can even export as pdf. Oo.o (with an extension) and GO-oo & OxygenOffice (out of the box) can open MSWorks & MSOffice2007 files (eg docx) and can convert pdf to doc or odf (sometimes formatting lost).

GO OpenOffice (Optimised version) (supported by Novell) - My personal preference - current version 3.1
OxygenOffice - Another optimised version of Oo.o including fonts clipart and many more extras - current version 2.7 (version 3.0.1 is also available but I think it is only in beta at the moment)

[edit] Also, almost forgot two CD/DVD burners: CDBurnerXP & ImgBurn. Both compatible with Win2k -> Win7 (inc Server OS). They have some unique features but as they are both primarily burning apps there is also a fair bit of crossover.

another good free prog that I use is CDisplay

I mainly use it for viewing comic books and graphic novels, but it can be used for all sorts of other things

unfortunately the main site is not working but there are plenty of places to grab it from if you google it. I have posted the link to the wiki page for it so you can have a look and and see if you think it's worth putting on your list (i didn't want to link to a download site for it as i'll leave that to you to decide on one you trust)

Thanks for the Freeware suggestions. Now for the Encryption Software Vista Users I highly recommend True Crypt. It's very easy to use and runs very smooth on Vista. PowerCrypt the other one is good to use if you like to send files to other people ''discretly'' without them installing the software to open the file. All the need is the paraphrase. Runs okay on Vista but if you just want protection just for yourself then True Crypt is the way to go.
